David G. Hartwell is a Senior Editor at Tor/Forge Books. He is the proprietor of Dragon Press, publisher and bookseller, which publishes The New York Review of Science Fiction. He is the author of Age of Wonders and the editor of many anthologies, including The Dark Descent, Masterpieces of Fantasy and Enchantment, The World Treasury of Science Fiction, Northern Stars, The Ascent of Wonder (co-edited with Kathryn Cramer), and a number of Christmas anthologies. Recently he edited his sixth annual paperback volume of Year's Best SF and co-edited the new Year's Best Fantasy. He has won the Eaton Award, the World Fantasy Award, and the Science Fiction Chronicle Poll and has been nominated for the Hugo Award twenty-four times to date.

Not a good selection

The choices of stories in this book are not very good. Some of them are repeats of other anthologies. Others are do not present very original ideas. I couldn't really get into any stories in this book. It's average at best.

The stories in this book are more like an authors notes than finished work. With the exception of two stories in this collection, they appeared to be a rambling unconnected assortment of pointles writing exercises. Save your money.

Disappointing Anthology for the Turn of the Millennium

Science fiction is an immensely broad category. It encompasses stories as diverse as standard monster fare (the movie ALIEN, for example), social satire (the TV series THIRD ROCK FROM THE SUN, the movie THE BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET), farce (THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS), adventure (STAR WARS) as well as more traditionally science oriented tales of our society (1984) or imaginary worlds far beyond ours (2001) and much more. Editing an anthology which proports to represent the best short science fiction published in a year must be an incredibly demanding task, and David Hartwell is to be commended for attempting to represent a fair share of this variety. But if this book genuinely represents the best of SF published in 1999, I have to wonder if some bizarre millennial fever didn't strike the SF world a bit early. As SF writers are, by definition, imaginative folks, did they as a group get a bit too worked up worrying about Y2K to concentrate on their writing? Well, of course not; and interestingly enough there is no looming sense of catastrophe in the vast majority of this anthology. Instead, the tales generally treasure our humanity over technology and offer a hopeful view of the future (with a few notable exceptions). And yet...
Hartwell's anthology is sizable, containing 25 short stories. Of these, less than half were memorable enough that as I write this review while looking at the table of contents, I actually remember the stories--this only a few days after completing the book. I'm definitely getting older, sure, and more crotchety; but as yet I've no noticable symptoms of Alzheimer's. The one word that comes to mind with regard to most of these stories is "ordinary".
However, about 10 of the stories were worth a read. Of these, the two best were Cory Doctrow's "Visit the Sins", portraying family relationships that developed after an attempt to cure Attention Deficit Disorder goes horribly awry; and Chris Lawson's "Written in Blood" was an engaging look at the border between faith and technology, with prejudice and hope entangling one another.
Robert Reed's "Game of the Century" posited a future in which genetic engineering gives us superhuman athletes, but more importantly explores how they would feel growing up as such. Sarah Zettel's "Kinds of Strangers" follows the psychological breakdown of the crew of a deep-space craft after a devastating equipment failure. Stephen Baxter's bleak "Huddle", about a future molded by genetic engineering and planetary catastrophe was easily the darkest story in the book. Curt Wohleber's "100 Candles" and Chris Beckett's "Valour" were genuinely well written, well conceived stories with interesting characters. Finally, translated from the Japanese, Hiroe Suga's "Freckled Figure" was a beautifully told tale that somehow bound together the spirit of ancient Japanese craftsmanship with the love of anime and technology that drives so much of Japan today.
For the sake of these stories, YEAR'S BEST SF 5 is worth a look. But if you really want great sci-fi, I'd HIGHLY recommend STARFISH by Peter Watts. I've just finished it and have to say it is the best sci-fi books I've read in many many years. I hope that David Hartwell is able to find fiction of that quality for future anthologies.

An indispensable tool - The missing piece to the Law of Attraction

The vast majority of people go through their entire lives unaware of the energy parasites that are attached to them. These etheric beings feed off of low frequency vibrational energy and once joined with a host, will constantly try to provoke that person into a negative head space. If you find yourself within inches of a goal, only to self sabotage at the last moment, chances are you've got energy parasites. If you find yourself in a pattern of pessimistic thinking you can't seem to snap out of, chances are you've got energy parasites. Got road rage? You've got parasites. Drink much? Smoke much? Eat too much? You too have parasites living vicariously through you. Using the techniques in this book, you will physically feel these little buggers as they release from your body and snap at your hands as you sweep them away and eviscerate them. You will be amazed at how quiet and peaceful your mind will get and how positive and confident you will get once these interferences are removed. Meditative states you were never able to get to - you will access with ease. Your self sabotaging self talk will be silenced. Positive autosuggestion, and self hypnosis aren't nearly as effective, and one only needs to read the suicide warnings that come with prescription anti-depressants to see the limitations of clinical psychiatry. None of those tools address the issue of negative etheric entities, but this book shows you how to send them to oblivion. I call this the missing piece of the Law of attraction, because unless you can get yourself free of these psychic leaches, it is almost impossible to maintain the consistently positive state of mind required for the manifestation of your desires.
Master Choa Kok Sui might not offer the quickest path to spiritual development, or even physical healing, but this book has the potential to do more to reduce emotional human suffering out there than perhaps any other.

True MASTERPIECE!!

I have spent about the last 10 years looking into the realm of energy psychology and I am constant awe of the discoveries of GM Choa!

The real gem of this book is using prana to remove non-physical entities like though-forms and elementals. These tiny little psychic parasites can be a huge aggravating factor in something like schizophrenia or even drug addiction.

A skilled pranic healer can remove even a severe drug addiction to heroine in 1-3 treatments! Amazing considering the length of traditional treatments.

Pranic healing has been tested in HUNDREDS of studies, some of them even double blind. Some of the effects were at a distance! Some were even on cultured cells in a petri dish, but time and time again pranic healing proved effective.

Lacks the depth that I'd anticipated on reading it. While focus is clearly on technique and methodology, and this is understandable,
any book exploring the integration of the effects of subtle energies (Prana, Chi, Ki, etc.) and psychology, I think, should included the
added "depth knowledge" that explains how and why the techniques and methodologies work. As a result, I think "Pranic Psychotherapy" establishes a learning situation wherein those seeking to become practitioners of the therapy may become trained in technique and metho- dology as layed out in the manual, while at the same time, be lacking in a deeper understanding of Mind, Subtle Energy, and how each are impacted by each.

Great resource for app development

Light reading for those interested in the iPhone and IOS development process. The book does not get into the details about coding in Objective-C. But it does layout a solid foundation for developing your app from concept to finish. The author makes the assumption that you will be handing off your concept or will be working close with a developer. Also, there's lots of useful tips and time saving techniques for preparing your assets to hand off to your developer.

Excellent book, strong on theory and examples

I purchased "Show me the numbers" by Stephen Few, "Storytelling with Data" by Cole Knaflic, and "Data at Work" by Camoes to improve some excel templates I maintain. I think Data at Work was the best of the three, with a strong overview of perception and information theory combined with a wide range of practical guidelines and examples.

Few's book is massive and comprehensive, but generally too detailed to be easily approachable. Knaflic's book is very much about the storytelling aspect, which is great if you're investing some serious time in individual graphs for something like a quarterly report (once you have the data and know what you want to say), but Data at Work had more content and example that were applicable to something like template building.

Doubly Useful: Excellent Design Tips & All Possible in Excel

This book is excellent. For better or worse, Excel is everywhere. Using it well for data visualization is beyond most people (and books!), but Jorge has you covered. His book is an excellent introduction and detailed guide to visualization core principles and best practices. Excel just happens to be Jorge's tool for communicating, and that makes his tips feel "accessible" to everyone. No obscure data vis tools or software are needed! That said, it does not read like a how-to in Excel, the focus is on design and presentation. All the data files are available on a separate book site. For me, this makes the book twice as useful, and I immediately added it to the top of my list of recommended references on data visualization.

I became aware of this book in Twitter and decided to give it a shot. I was impressed with all of its content. I can tell Jorge spent a long time writing and researching this book. This is not another Excel book from the mill. It uses Excel charts only to illustrate how to approach data challenges. I strongly recommend this book if you are seeking new perspectives on how to present data. It is a much comprehensive book than most of the colorful "pretty chart" visualization and "difficult to understand" data science books available from Amazon.

Sally Huss writes delightful and entertaining children stories. But more importantly, they all are filled with essential life lessons parents want to instill in their children. "Kevin's Birthday Turtle" is another case in point. Sally bring the magical world of the sea and all its creatures to life in this story of a young boy and his sea turtle. As the boy learns, all creatures must be treated with care and compassion. Another important message for children taught in a perfectly charming way!

Good Story, Good Message

This book will set a child’s imagination going by following the little hero of this story as he travels beneath the sea. But it will also plant the seed of compassion for another, in this case, his turtle. I think this is a wonderful story that demonstrates how important a promise is. The idea here can be applied to any child’s caring of his own pet or even of himself. The many illustrations are charming, colorful, and move along beautifully with the rhythm of the story. Highly recommended.

Wow! What a Great Great Story

This is just the cutest story. A perfect under the sea adventure with a wonderful moral to the story. The illustrations are brilliant and the story is very well told. In this fun story your children will learn that pets need care, love and appreciation while your children are being thoroughly entertained as they're learning. Nice. Both my 2 yr. old and my 6 year old loved it! Absolutely recommended!

Condensing millions of years of life on earth into a 512-page single-volume encyclopedia, this ambitious work presents earth’s history from its formation through the Mesolithic period (Middle Stone Age). Divided into three sections, Prehistoric Life begins with a brief look at “Young Earth.” Two-page spreads examine topics such as plate tectonics, fossils, and the geological timescale. The bulk of the volume discusses “Life on Earth” and is divided by era from the Archean through the Quaternary. Each section introduces the plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates (as applicable) representative of that time period. The final section delves into “The Rise of the Humans” and discusses human relatives, ancestors, origins, and migration patterns. Although a wealth of scientific information is provided, the illustrative material is the star of this volume. The collection of full-color photographs of fossils (ranging from spore to dinosaur) and skeletons show amazing detail and clarity. Visitors to a natural history museum could not explore the number of examples contained here. Where actual photographs are obviously not available, DK commissioned 3-D images, “modeled using scientific research” to bring life-forms to the page for readers. Photographs and other images are accompanied by information about the creature such as name, group, date, and location. Scaled images (of either a thumb, a hand, or a human) are used to help readers visualize actual sizes. Geared to adults, this work will find popularity with science enthusiasts and browsers alike. Because of the relatively low cost, public libraries will likely want more than one copy. Another Home Run for DK

DK has certainly made a name for itself in producing a long line of visually stunning, reference books. Prehistoric Life is a good example of a genre that DK seemed to have invented. The visuals are perfect. DK has some secret printing method that allows its pictures to be excitedly fine textured and vivid. The writing which could be quite pedestrian is well done and done at a adult level. The material is very current and original. It presented material that was totally new to me: the prototaxites on pages 114-115 which look like an eerie spike that was over 26 feet tall and could be either a plant or a fungus. I also liked that DK didn't dwell on dinosaurs (although it has a lot of material about them) but also spent time on plants and invertebrates. At 512 pages it covers a lot of territory. And at the bargain basement price it carries, if you are going to get one book about ancient life, get this book. My only quibble is that the maps showing the distribution of the continents are needlessly simplified. However, that said, I am going to give this my highest recommendation.

Huge, Visually Stunning and Informative

This is your typical coffee table book from DK Publishers. Massive in size as well as scope, it covers everything from the beginnings of the planet until we settled down and started farming. With breathtaking CG images as well as real pictures of fossils, "Prehistoric Life" will entrance younger members of the family, while its informative text and nicely-arranged narrative will give adults all the prehistory they can handle. What you have here is a high-quality tome, printed on thick, glossy paper. It gives the impression that you should have paid $100.00 or more for it. Quite a value at the price offered here. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

This work is a masterpiece. It tells the whole story of our planet, life here and the causes and effects of changes through time. It is both highly scientific and highly visual. It should be the founding text of any life sciences curriculum. I can't put it down.
