Always witty and flamboyant, poet, critic, and biographer Dame Edith Sitwell was a champion of literary modernity. As a younger poet she challenged formal conventions with her own verses, such as the satirical romp Façade (1922). Later, her poetry sternly turned to class issues before she fell from fashion in the 1930s. After the Second World War, Sitwell enjoyed renewed public acclaim until her death in 1964. Her works include Clowns' Houses (1918), Gold Coast Customs (1929), The Song of the Cold (1948), Gardeners and Astronomers (1953), and The Outcasts (1962).

About the Author
Dame Edith Sitwell (1897-1964) poet, critic, and biographer, edited the lauded Wheels anthology of modern verse from 1916 to 1921 and become a Dame Commander, Order of the British Empire, in 1954.

Poetry of Historic Value

This is a big (445 page) quality paperback including poems important enough to earn their author the title Dame Edith Sitwell (equivalent to a Knighthood for males). Sitwell (1887-1964) is one of the greatest female poets in history, ranking as equal in impact to poets such as Emily Dickenson and Maya Angelou. She is a master of rhyming poetry in which the ending words of adjacent lines rhyme. I normally prefer that lines 2 and 4 rhyme, but once I got used to her approach, I learned to like it. Many times I would read to the end of a line and had difficulty imagining how she could get out of this pickle, meaning I could not think of a word that would rhyme with the word ending the previous line. She must have had a huge vocabulary, a great rhyming dictionary or both. The only negative I can think of involves her use of unusual words and the names of rarely known real persons or mythical characters that might throw stops and starts in for some readers.

Amazing... beautiful. The type of flowing, perfect, and elusive poetry that resonates through your being, enriching and awakening you. I lucked into this book somewhat randomly; I will just say that Edith Sitwell is a poet and an intellect of a very high order.

About the Author
Susan M. Brookhart is an independent consultant in educational assessment and also a senior research associate at the Center for Advancingthe Study of Teaching and Learning in the School of Education at Duquesne University. She has served on several state assessment technical advisory committees. She is a former professor and chair of the Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership at Duquesne. Previous to her higher education experience, she taught both elementary and middle school. Her research interests include the role of both formative and summative classroom assessment in student motivation and achievement, the connection between classroom assessment and large-scale assessment, and grading. Professor Brookhart was the 2007-2009 editor of Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice. She has served as the education columnist for National Forum, the journal of Phi Kappa Phi. She is a past president of the American Educational Research Association's Special Interest Group on Classroom Assessment and a current member of the Board of Directors of the National Council on Measurement in Education. In all, Professor Brookhart is author or coauthor of 16 books and over 60 articles and book chapters on classroom assessment, teacher professional development, and evaluation. With Anthony J. Nitko, she is the co-author of Assessment and Grading in Classrooms and Educational Assessment of Students. With the late Norman E. Gronlund, she is the co-author of Gronlund's Writing Instructional Objectives (8th ed.). Some of the journals in which her research has appeared are Applied Measurement in Education, Assessment in Education: Principles, Policy, & Practice, Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, Journal of Educational Measurement, Journal of Educational Research, Oxford Review of Education , Review of Educational Research, and Teachers College Record . He co-authored (with Susan Brookhart) the chapter, "Strategies for constructing assessments of higher order thinking skills" (2011). He also co-authored (with C.M. Lindvall) Measuring Pupil Achievement and Aptitude , (with T-C Hsu) Pitt Educational Testing Aids (PETA) (a package of computer programs for classroom teachers), and (with R. Glaser) the chapter "Measurement in Learning and Instruction" in the Second Edition of Educational Measurement . Professor Nitko has been Editor of the journal Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice , and later served as the International News Editor of this journal. He was also Editor of d'News, the AERA Division D newsletter. Some of the journals in which his research has appeared include American Educational Research Journal , Applied Measurement in Education , Assessment in Education: Principles, Policy, & Practice , Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis , Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice , Educational Technology , Journal of Educational Measurement , and Research in Developmental Disabilities . Inch by inch it's a cinch!

I love this quote from Your Custom Homestead:

I've always been the careful and cautious type, with the result of having lots of dreams and packets of seeds, but not many results. This ebook lays out a simple 21-day action plan for bringing my dreams into concretion - not all at once, but inch-by-inch, in a practical way. I'm glad I purchased this book, and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to grow toward a 'homestead' lifestyle.

Can't Wait!

This book is amazing! Usually I never finish a "How To" book because I feel I have to start the steps now to fully understand what the author is talking about. But, I couldn't put my computer down until I had read every last page (even the acknowledgments). I can't wait to get started!...On my own Custom Homestead that is. Jill does a wonderful job explaining not only the steps & rewards of Homesteading, but also the possible pitfalls. Thank You for writing this ebook.

Before You Move Off the Grid

Jill Winger writes a wonderful book. I love that she helps us to redefine Homesteading. Every person who really wants to take this on, is able to homestead.

This is not just for old hippies treading lightly on Mother Earth. It is homesteading redefined. Jill helps us see that we can buy into as much or a little of the homesteading life as suits us.

She helps us define why we want to homestead and what we will need to succeed. Even if you can't dive into country living, you may choose to adopt a less complicated life. And this is the part that I really liked about this book:

To get us started in the homesteading life, she offers us some great resources. This is how I will get into homesteading; building self reliance and independence a step at a time.

Worst Textbook Publisher

Do not spend the money on the additional expense of ConnectPlus!
Save yourself the money; rent a Kindle edition and purchase a Connect Registration code for your online homework.

McGraw Hill falsely claims an eBook that is not viewable on devices with eReaders ie iPad, Kindle, etc., but through a web browser only, with no page-by-page reading option. And if you do want it accessible offline, your instructor has to "create" the text on McGraw Create, and you have to purchase it from that website. As it does not qualify as the eBook with your $300 purchase. As for the eBook browswer, It also does not support the eBook "standard" features of a highlighter and post it notes. Instead you are only able to arrow/tab pages left and right, skip pages, search terms, and print. When asked why this feature wasn't supported, The McGraw tech support staff said, "It's just not." And when I asked how I can prevent overpaying in the future for a feature that isn't available, they told me I had to call McGraw customer support every time I'm interested in a book to ask if all eBook features are fully supported. There are two rentals for this book, one is for just the book only for $29.99 and one with the connect card for $88.16

For some reason it has the reviews for both rental links which confuses everyone. Those who rented book only for $29.99 are posting that it didn't come with the access card. If you want the access card, order the $88.16 and it will come with a unscratched code.

I have to agree with a lot of the other reviews. There are various issues with this textbook that will leave you with a severe dislike of managerial accounting and a less than stellar grade. To preface my review, I used this textbook during the Fall 2012 semester for an independent study online course in my MBA program.

1. Each chapter is too concise. The concepts are often explained in the language of accountants and you'll only get one example of (or one way to view) a particular concept.
2. The end of chapter homework does not include an answer key or explanations. Your only way to really practice the concepts is by using the online access component, which is shoddily designed and also not helpful. Believe it or not, a lot of students prefer to work with a paper, pencil, and calculator.
3. The online access component consists of three parts: practice homework, regular homework, and quizzes. The problem I frequently encountered was that you would work through the practice homework and feel fairly confident about your understanding of the chapter, but then the regular homework would completely blindside you and have no similarities to the practice homework. The quizzes were a toss-up as to whether they related to the homework concepts.
4. There seemed to be a lot of errors in the online component where none of the answers to a question were correct. From what my professor told the class, this was due to a mix-up between the 15th and 16th edition answer keys.

I know that some of these are typical student complaints, and I'm one of those people who does not "get" accounting, but in an independent study course, the book is all I really have to learn the subject matter. To be a good reviewer, I have some suggestions in case the authors are reading this review:

1. Please be consistent in your terminology when explaining concepts in each chapter. For example, if you use the term "earnings", please continually use that term throughout the rest of the chapter instead of switching to "profits". This is a really base example, but not all of us are professional business jargon speakers. Studying should be about learning the concepts, not developing a mental thesaurus of the various terms that describe cost of goods sold.
2. If you must use the online component, please check for consistency between the practice homework, regular homework, and quizzes. The presentation of problems and concepts tested should ideally be presented in a similar manner between the three, with the difference being in level of difficulty.
3. Give us back the end of chapter homework! Unless, of course, the end goal is to gain another $50 for a poorly executed online access component?
