A lackluster "remake" of Doreen's past angel deck.

[[VIDEOID:5437cc2bf67a66a92b2d9591eea8c9a0]] Angel Answers by Doreen Virtue and Radleigh Valentine could almost be interpreted as a remake of Doreen's earlier deck "Daily Guidance from your Angels". The addition of direct answers (ex: Yes, No, timelines, etc) are extremely useful. Unfortunately, the lack of development and poor imagery exceeds the value of any improvements. I do believe that Doreen's more recent decks serve best as an addition to a collection, though I miss the substance, originality, and inspiration of the earlier releases. Overall, this is an average deck, and a great example of why some originals should be treasured as they are. Hopefully this deck won't be getting a sequel any time soon. Radleigh Helped Me Make This Deck More Consistent

I have enjoyed this oracle deck. This is going to be a quick review as there isn't much to say about these cards as the intent of it is quite straightforward. So sometimes we simply need a yes or a no answer! This deck is meant for that.

Within the deck is Doreen Virtue's standard 44-cards. What I love about this deck is that it was created with Radleigh Valentine who I think is amazing with the realm of Tarot and oracle card divination. I think some of Doreen's best decks are the ones where she's actually utilized other people to make... so her oracle tarot collection with Radleigh and also the Indigo Angel deck with her son, are a few examples.

INITIAL READINGS:
Um, my initial readings with this deck was mixed. I would find that it would give me somewhat contradictory answers especially if I pulled more than one card (ie 2 cards). Sometimes when I pulled one card it would be an inaccurate reading. If I pulled two cards, they would often contradict, but at least one of them were accurate. Therefore I decided not to rely on this deck for such answers, which was a shame because after all that was the purpose of the deck.

RADLEIGH VALENTINE'S TUTORIAL:
So recently I was listening to HayHouse radio (the publisher of all of Doreen Virtue, Sonia Choquette, Esther Hicks, etc. stuff) and Radleigh has his one hour weekly radio broadcast and he decided for that show to highlight using Angel Answers deck. After hearing this episode something really clicked! He utilizes this deck differently than Doreen. Doreen tells you to pull only one card from out of the 44-cards and that's your answer. Radleigh uses it differently. He separates the one deck into 3 different piles. One pile is for the yes/no type of cards. The other pile is for timing cards. The third pile is for the rest of the cards. So if you have a question and you want a simple yes/no, you pick up the pile of yes/no type of cards and shuffle those for answers. If you want to know when it will take place, you would pick up the pile for timing cards and shuffle and pick one card. If you want other details then you would resort to picking up the last pile of cards. So yes, Radleigh is a genius! He also tells you there are 2 "No" cards and two "Yes" cards, one of each has an exclamation mark at the end. If you get one of the emphatic YES or NO cards, its telling you absolutely a very strong yes or no... so don't even doubt the answer.

MY READINGS NOW:
Using Radleigh's technique had improved my readings with these cards so dramatically its very consistent now. I'm just waiting for the events I've inquire about to pass. I think one did already, and using his technique it was accurate.

CONS:
The images are kinda like a pink cotton candy puked over this deck with a gilded Liberace feel. However the cardstock quality on this deck is amazing! I feel really kinestetically connected which is not common for me with a lot of Doreen Virtue decks. The timing cards only go up to a year... it would be nice if they added more timing possibilities. However, you can use the yes/no type of cards for asking anything beyond a year in regards to timing, you would simply have to be specific with your question... or more general (ie will I be married more than 20 years?).

OVERALL:
I reduced this deck by one star only because if I didn't happen to hear Radleigh Valentine's tutorial on HayHouse Radio I would have discarded the deck as inaccurate and inconsistent.

My new go to oracle card deck!

These cards are just stunning. If you are drawn to Angels and high vibrational messages, these are the cards for you! The messages are simple and to the point, not sugar coated at all. The images emit a lot of radiant energy, there is a lot of yellow and violet in these cards, which I personally enjoy. Some reviewers complain about the cards being too repetitive or similar to other Doreen's decks. Some messages are repeated, but it does not affect the usefulness of the deck itself. Some of the cards clearly give messages about timing, and others a clear Yes or No answer. There is enough symbology on the images to extract more data if required. Remember that it is up to the reader to receive these messages, the cards are just the tools. If you are a fan of light beings, you will enjoy this deck. As stated in the guidebook, this deck is a great complement to other oracle decks, it will solidify and clarify the answers for the reader.

Jon E. Grant, JD, MD, MPH, is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Chicago and the coauthor of Stop Me Because I Can’t Stop Myself: Taking Control of Impulsive Behavior. Brian L. Odlaug, PhD, MPH, is a visiting researcher in public health at the University of Copenhagen. Samuel R. Chamberlain, MD, PhD, is a clinical lecturer and psychiatrist at the University of Cambridge. Dr. Grant’s Why Can't I Stop? provides a glimpse into the world of behaviour addictions. This book looks at those behavioural addictions that most closely resemble drug addiction. The beginning chapters cover what it means to have a behavioural addiction, how they may develop, and the fact that they oft pair with physical addictions of some sort.

The next seven chapters cover the behavioural addictions they found most resembling drug addiction- gambling, stealing, sex, internet, food, shopping/buying, and hair-pulling and skin picking. Each has its own devoted chapter that covers development, which drug addiction paths it may be similar too, genetic and environmental factors in development, treatment goals, and best therapy methods. Each also has case studies to illustrate points. The final chapters cover causes of behavioural disorders, and how family and friends can help.

This book is written by a doctor, but it is meant for the average person to read, the people who may be burdened with one of these issues, or for the family and friends of such a person, to help them better understand what is going on. Sometimes things necessarily get a bit technical, but I found it an easy read.

Honesty- I had very personal reasons for reading this book. I have one of the described behavioural conditions. My past attempts at 'resetting’ my behaviour have met with frustrating failure. Thinking of this condition in terms of a drug addiction was a bit hard to swallow at first. The mind wanted to rebel ferociously, a good sign there's truth behind the words. My next feelings were ones of relief. I may be able to fix it after all! This book was also very helpful to my family, in understanding my behaviour in a different light. Reading the section most pertinent to me helped them begin to accept that the problem is real, and how difficult it is for me to just 'stop’.

Highly recommended if you have one of the listed behavioural issues or know someone who does. It offers a whole new perspective on things. Also recommended for psychology students or enthusiasts.

Great writing, amazing trivia and footnotes!

I bought this out of curiosity. Then, I started reading it. I was awake half the night, reading it. I could not put it down.

The biggest surprise was how useful this book is. I expected fun trivia, and it includes that. However, I didn't expect several "quirks" related to my current work and interests. Even better, the depth of coverage and references (for additional research) make this book really useful.

A lot of books jump from one cool fact to the next. This book not only covers the facts, it supplies supporting (and conflicting) evidence, ties it all together nicely, and goes into considerable depth on each topic.

I'll keep this book on my reference shelf, and buy everything Wiseman writes. The writing is brilliant but accessible, and a perfect mix of academic coverage with the kinds of quirky, wonderful details that make this a page-turner.

Similar to Freakonomics, but 1 billion times better! Highly recommended!

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I bought this book, but it turned out to be a lot like the book Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (P.S.) - only Dr. Wiseman's book is much, much better. Wiseman says that: "Put simply, quirkology uses scientific methods to study the more curious aspects of everyday life. This approach to psychology has been pioneered by a few researchers over the past hundred years who have followed in Galton's footsteps and had the courage to explore the places mainstream scientists avoid."

Hopefully the chapters can give you a gist as to what you will find in this book: Chapter 1 - What does your date of birth really say about you?, The New Science of Chronopsychology; Chapter 2 - Trust everyone, but always cut the cards, The Psychology of Lying and Deception; Chapter 3 - Believing six impossible things before breakfast, Psychology Enters the Twilight Zone; Chapter 4 - Making your mind up, The Strange Science of Decision Making; Chapter 5 - The scientific search for the world's funniest joke, Explorations into the Psychology of Humor; Chapter 6 - Sinner or saint?, The Psychology of When We Help and When we Hinder; Chapter 7 - The pace of life and other quirkological oddities, The Future of Quirkology.

In short, this is a terrific book. In many respects it shares a lot in common with not only Freakonomics and Superfreakonomics, but also books like Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions (Revised & Expanded Edition), The Mind of the Market: How Biology and Psychology Shape Our Economic Lives, Why We Make Mistakes: How We Look Without Seeing, Forget Things in Seconds, and Are All Pretty Sure We Are Way Above Average and How We Decide. I highly recommend this book and also recommend Wiseman's newest book, 59 Seconds: Think a Little, Change a Lot (Borzoi Books). I would definitely have given this book 5 starts even if it only had included the chapters on Lying and Deception and The Scientific Search for the World's Funniest Joke - the whole book is hilarious, entertaining and above all, informative. This is a truly great read.

Fun read

This is a collection of info about oddball tests and studies conducted by psychologists. Much of the information is very entertaining. It's a "good read." However, does the alleged fact that women who drive vans are the most likely to sneak more than ten items through the express checkout in the supermarket really matter? Time after time, while reading this book, I wondered, why would anybody study this. Its fun fodder for talk around the water cooler, but pretty much meaningless. Also, I think some of the conclusions that were drawn from these studies were giant leaps of speculation. The author is an entertaining writer. This is the second book of his that I have read and enjoyed. However, if you are looking for something serious about psychological research, this isn't it. I do recommend this book. I enjoy Wiseman, and will continue to read his books.

Petronius (C. or T. Petronius Arbiter), who is reasonably identified with the author of this famous satyric and satiric novel, was a man of pleasure and of good literary taste who flourished in the times of Claudius (41–54 CE) and Nero (54–68). As Tacitus describes him, he used to sleep by day, and attend to official duties or to his amusements by night. At one time he was governor of the province of Bithynia in Asia Minor and was also a consul, showing himself a man of vigour when this was required. Later he lapsed into indulgence (or assumed the mask of vice) and became a close friend of Nero. Accused by jealous Tigellinus of disloyalty and condemned, with self-opened veins he conversed lightly with friends, dined, drowsed, sent to Nero a survey of Nero's sexual deeds, and so died, 66 CE.

The surviving parts of Petronius's romance Satyricon mix philosophy and real life, prose and verse, in a tale of the disreputable adventures of Encolpius and two companions, Ascyltus and Giton. In the course of their wanderings they attend a showy and wildly extravagant dinner given by a rich freedman, Trimalchio, whose guests talk about themselves and life in general. Other incidents are a shipwreck and somewhat lurid proceedings in South Italy. The work is written partly in pure Latin, but sometimes purposely in a more vulgar style. It parodies and otherwise attacks bad taste in literature, pedantry and hollow society.

Apocolocyntosis, "Pumpkinification" (instead of deification), is probably by Seneca the wealthy philosopher and courtier (ca. 4 BCE–65 CE). It is a medley of prose and verse and a political satire on the Emperor Claudius written soon after he died in 54 CE and was deified.

Welcome! Gaius Petronius Arbiter. It was not for naught! Thank you!

There is something we would say to ourselves had we time and patience, but neither congregation here hold this morning. Yet would a signal fire send up to readers to notice this poor old Roman who like many of his contemporaries and those of other times, places, were lost/found afloat the terrors and inhumanity of Their time.

With squint intrepid then, having taken him up - Gaius Petronius Arbiter - (Seneca perhaps later) with his, I think, unfortunate secondary position in the Latin cannon (whatever the reason(s), perhaps including his sharing of more than time, locale and circumstance with Lucan), with some overlook of the sexual mores of the time, I have found his full-story prosaic novel part-inventing poetic sense and strain of the highest order.

Content, what one has to say as writer, Is King! And sorry the shocks of sexuality above alluded to, this is a superb read and gather of intelligence,
which many, at least, in fact read for.

I found him (to repeat) intelligent, forward looking in his helps of mankind, and as honest as history and the scholia have been able to hand down to us. And so, Highly Recommended is the writer/poet Gaius Petronius Arbiter, who even now, is as many a great worker, enlightening, relevant and visionary.

The lessons, sorry to say, are the same. Will man ever pay his so little attention and learn?

Defective copy

This is a wonderful edition and one of my favorite publishers, but there are pages that did not print and are blank--for example pp. 116-17, 120-21, 124-25, 128-29, 132-33, 136-37, 140-41 and 144-45.

The missing text, of course, disrupts and diminishes the story and the whole reading experience.

If the publisher would replace my defective copy, then the rating would be five stars.

Latin Meneppian Satire

These two puzzling pieces of literature fall into the playful genre of Mennepian satire, a unique method which blends prose, verse, and dialogue. In this genre, modes of interpretation are various and always open-ended; and it is usually the author's purpose to keep it as such. The first text in this volume is Petronius' Satyricon, a Latin novel which closely resembles the later work of Apuleius, The Golden Ass. The stage for the tales in the Satyricon are set in the rural south of Italy. The stories in the Satyricon are bawdy and full of everything that a hedonist of the Neronian period would agree upon. It would be somewhat unnecessary to lay out the plot line since the narrative is often times difficult to follow and the surviving text is fragmentary. Petronius' merit as an author and poet, for the most part, lies in the effect his writings had on the generations to follow. The second work in this volume is the great Seneca's Apocolocyntosis or Pumpkification of the Divine Claudius. This short work is a biting satire--which is quite humorous--aimed at the shamefully deified emperor Claudius. Essentially, it is a work which purports to "undiefy" the insane emperor and send him to Hades where he belongs. Overall, these two works are moderately enjoyable. For the poet or satirist there is a wealth of material to draw upon, for people like Erasmus and Rabelais found much to digest in them.
