well written and understandable.

Not only does the author know what he's talking about, he knows how to communicate it. As a long time Java programmer, many of the aspects of JavaScript were mysterious and obtuse, or at least the way they were explained made them seem that way. Scope and Closure are two of those aspects and now they seem simple obvious artifacts of the functional nature of the JavaScript language. Now all the patterns that the other books demonstrate but don't bother to explain seem much more clear. I can look at the language with new eyes and new understanding. Highly recommended for anyone that needs an under-the-hood understanding of JavaScript and anyone that wants to side-swipe smug job interviewers that want to trip you up with manufactured mis-understandable code.

Good Explanations Minus Other Useful Good Explanations

While this book attempts to demystify javascript scope and closures for javascript developers, it makes the topic mildly less mysterious. After reading this book, I think the explanation of both topics feels unfinished. I may go and re-read this book again. Its like The Good Parts without the immediately good even if controversial ideas in it.

The author rather than try to fit in a full discussion on scope and closures elects to put additional information into an appendix which takes the reader away from very relevant and related questions that would likely further the readers understanding of the subject matter without having to skip all over the place. Usually, I tend to think of an appendix as off topic, related and useful information rather than a way to artificially keep the chapters short.

LHS/RHS scope explanation feels out of place being located in the first few chapters of this book. (Note: On some level I understand the logic of it being here.) Somehow I feel like its a complex theoretical topic being thrown at you right away before you have a solid context. The author probably could be more successful with explaining LHS/RHS scope by starting with day to day scoping problems developers have with their code now. Instead it comes off as too theoretical too fast and if you are not already well versed on compiler theory you can get lost right at the beginning of the book.

The question becomes are we trying to explain scope to developers who do not understand scope or are we trying to sound smart to developers who probably already understand scope.

The other thing I think is lacking with this book's explanation of scope is this and passing scope around and executing functions in a scope outside of their own. Giving a full and in depth explanation if this is immediately useful in solving problems developers have everyday.

Lastly, the information on closures really only lasts for a chapter and then its really just a definition and showing off some common javascript patterns that closures rather than a full explanation of closures.

Ive read other reviews claiming the length is a plus but I feel like I would have liked those 20 pages they shaved off this book back. My review comes off as negative despite my 3.75 star review because I strongly feel like it could have been a 5 star book. There is great explanations in this book minus other great explanations that were left out of this book.

An intermediate-level book covering two essential topics that are not always well-understood by developers

This book is like a UNIX command: it does one thing, and it does it well. The shortness of this book is one of its redeeming qualities, as it can be read rather quickly. Some people might like having a handy tome, but most of those tomes seem to be optimized for reference rather than straight reading. And if you have a physical book, those kind of tomes are heavy.

The book covers scope and closures, topics that are not always understood by JavaScript developers with working experience or developers coming from other languages. It's good that the book starts at an intermediate level and assumes you have basic JavaScript knowledge, so it does not have to cover syntax, loops, conditionals, objects, etc. If you are a beginner, stay away.

I didn't think the coverage of left-hand side and right-hand side in chapter 1 was relevant for the book, but that seems to be the only "extraneous" part of the book. The author created four appendix chapters to cover "extra" material.

The coverage of closures was particularly fascinating, because as the author pointed out, we've all seen closures, but we didn't know they were there in the code. The book has the BEST explanation of closures I have read yet. I think Kyle's explanation of closures even trumps John Resig's explanation of closures from his book, "Secrets of the Javascript Ninja."

Overall, I found the book easy to read, and it helped better my understanding of these two topics of JavaScript.

Worthy Content in Search of an Editor

The author's experiences are not only valuable (and valid) reflections on the current landscape of life in Indonesia, they are also interesting, even gripping. And his powers of observation and expression are more than adequate. The book, however, doesn't work as well as it should have, for lack of a competent and active editor. What we have here is raw material, well structured, but desperately seeking an editor. Let's hope for a second edition, with additional material, after the project has been embraced by a serious publisher that will give this raw manuscript the attention it needs and deserves. I'm surprised this hasn't happened yet, given the potential (market potential, film potential) of the raw material. Get this man an agent! And a drink. Immediately.

Bali High, Bali Low

This book is a great reader, taking no time to turn page after page of a well written account of one man's descent into a cultural web of deceit and disillusionment. A more than competent writer, Michael Donnelly guides us,not only from personal experience, but with the flair of a master raconteur, as he chronicles in great depth the story of his failed marriage to a Bali beauty, and the turbid nature inherent in dealing with foreign cultures, long removed from the legal protections of first world societies. He openly shares his devil's trade of beauty for years of anguish and pain, risking his own financial well being, and his children, for a siren's song that plays out badly indeed. And like any ancient Greek, we are hereby forewarned of the tremendous challenges and disasters that await anyone who fails to heed warnings against sirens when dealing with the darker side of humanity, especially while blinded by the light of love and desire. A stern admonition for not only potential Bali visitors, but for young lovers who fail to protect their own interests at the expense of a starry-eyed idealism that never has, nor ever will, exist.

A personal reflection on Eleven Demons

I can think of two very good reasons for reading Eleven Demons. First, it is a great read, a genuine page-turner. Mr Donnelly is an excellent storyteller by any standard. He weaves the many threads of this complex account with care, always maintaining the flow of the "plot" as well as a strong sense of suspense - an unusual feature in a personal memoir. He introduces new characters with economy of description, but finds ways to bring them to life as he moves the story on. He tells this deeply personal and at times distressing account without any hint of special pleading or sympathy-seeking. Mr Donnelly describes Eleven Demons as a love story. This is an apt depiction given that he means "love" with all the subtle meanings and connotations that the word can have.

Second, this is a great story about expatriate life in Bali in particular and perhaps in Indonesia in general. As a long term resident of Indonesia myself, the story is full of resonances with my own experience. After nearly a decade here, this wonderful country and its friendly people still continue to provide me with genuine surprises. Just when you think you have all the cross-cultural issues tidied away, you stumble onto something that takes your breath away. This book provided me with several more of those surprises. Reading Eleven Demons affirmed to me that, when we expats arrive in an apparent paradise like Bali, we bring a set of values and attitudes of which we are barely aware. Over time we are encouraged, teased, seduced or pressed into keeping some of those values and bending others, while some we simply throw away. Want to find out what I mean? Just read the book!

Roman Christianity

Robert Wilken takes a somewhat slightly different tack with this book of Roman history. He examines Christianity in the Roman Empire by looking at it through the eyes of pagan critics. Wilken states in his introduction that his goal in this book is to bring Roman history into closer conjunction with early Christianity. He argues that by studying the context of pagan critics, one can understand how the early Church shaped its theology and doctrines.
Wilken examines five pagan critics, starting with Pliny the Younger's letters to the emperor Trajan circa 112 C.E. Galen, Celsus, Porphyry and the Roman emperor Julian round out the cast of characters. As the accounts unfold, the development of Christianity can be seen clearly: from a small, almost unknown sect in Pliny's day to the powerful apparatus it became by the time Julian launched his reactionary attacks in the late 4th century. The attacks on Christians become more theological as time progresses, showing an increasing sophistication as knowledge about Christianity became better known. Pliny mentioned the Christians in passing, one event among many in his role as a provincial governor. By the time of Celsus, Porphyry and Julian, whole books are being written to refute Christian ideas.
Wilken points out that Pliny's concerns with the Christians mirror his function as a politician. With Galen, a concern for philosophical schools is reflected in his attack on Christianity, namely the creation doctrine and how it compares with the Greek conception of creation as Plato defined it in his work, Timaeus. Celsus attacks Christianity on several fronts, most importantly that Christianity is an apostasy from Judaism and that Jesus was a magician. Porphyry, a philosopher and literary scholar, demolishes the Christian view of the Book of Daniel and criticizes the Christian worship of Jesus on an equal footing with God. Julian takes criticism of Christianity much further, first by banning Christians from traditional Greek and Latin schools and an attempt to rebuild the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. The idea of rebuilding the temple was an attempt to isolate Christians who believed that they were the legitimate successors to the Jewish traditions. By reconstructing the Temple, the Jews would be restored to their traditional role as defined in the Old Testament, relegating Christians to their rightful place: apostates of Judaism. The Temple project failed when Julian died on campaign in Persia and Christian emperors once again assumed power.
This is an excellent book that inspires the reader to pursue further reading on this fascinating topic. What is most relevant is that the same questions we ask about Christianity today have been around for almost two thousand years. This is recommended reading for Roman buffs and Christian scholars alike.

This is another book I read long ago and recently bought for my adult son, who received the salvation offered by our Savior a few years back. If anyone truly wants to know what Christians should be, seeing them through the eyes of the non-believing society or Rome back in their earliest days is the best way to find out. This book is written with no agenda, simply a great understanding of how the first Christians were within society. We should all be this same way today...

The Odd Cult of Christianity Through Pagan Eyes

This fine volume explores the delayed, and often bewildered, response from the powerful Roman pagans of the first few centuries of the Common Era to the strange group of stand-offish cultists known to them as "Christians."

In the first decades of the 2nd century, Roman government official Pliny struggled to understand and deal with the Christian problem in Asia Minor. His correspondence with the emporer Trajan is a fascinating account from an outsider with regard to what the Romans of the day considered a "political club." Eventually, Pliny and Trajan decided upon a "don't ask, don't tell" policy with regard to the "foreign cultists."

Dr. Wilken goes on to observe that to many Romans, the 2nd century Christians were a sort of "burial club," with unique rituals surrounding the handling of their dead. These same pagans were themselves religious people (a fact often overlooked by Christians from all ages), and from time to time had to remind the Christians of that fact.

Another aspect of the difficult Christians had with established, pagan Roman society stems from the inextricable nature of politics and religion in pagan Rome. A civic function was likely to involve sacrifices to the local pagan gods. A person who failed to participate in such state actions, therefore, might be called an "atheist" (as Christians were so called).

The pagan philosopher Galen (last part of 2nd century CE) informed himself about Christianity and saw it as a competing philosophy. (About this time, St. Justin Martyr similarly described his Christian beliefs.) Galen was the first informed critic to attack specific perceived weaknesses in Christianity: How could God create everything from nothing? He rejected Christianity as unprovable and requiring too much faith.

Next, Celsus (about 170 CE) was even better informed about Christian claims. He was also clever and sarcastic. In fact, Christians spent generations refuting the issues he brought up. Celsus called Jesus a "magician" (similar to Jewish claims probably from the same time period preserved in the Talmudic writings), and wondered how shameful Christian claims that God could come to earth could possibly be taken seriously. Why did God wait until just recently to send his son? Did he not love people before? If the Christians have one God, why do they also worship his son? Celsus concluded that Christians were merely a sect in apostasy from the more ancient Judaism. These and other criticism kept Christians from later generations (such as Origen) busy.

The great (neo)Platonic philosopher, Porphory (3rd century) went to battle Christianity for the minds and hearts of his civilization. By his time Christianity had grown into a major religious and philosophical force, and Porphory went to work. Christians were responding to him into the 5th century! Porphory had been aquainted with Origen and probably knew Christian sacred writings fairly well as evidenced by his criticims of the Book of Daniel with regard to history vs. prophecy, and the authorship of books attributed to Moses. In fact, Porphory subjected Christian sacred writings to an early form of historical criticism and required Christians to re-examine those books. But Porphory also found the Christian unwillingness to participate in the traditional politico-religious life of his beloved civilization offensive and dangerous to society.

The book ends with Julian "the apostate" (late 4th century) and the last view of Christianity - now a powerful force - through devout pagan eyes. Raised a Christian, Julian became a devout, religious pagan. A convert to the ancient gods of classical culture, he attempted a short-lived program to restore them, but died after less than two years as emperor. But his attacks from Christian scripture against Christianity were intended to prove that Jesus was merely a man, and his criticisms of sacrifices disstinct from those of his pagan heritage were designed to show that they were false.

For all students of early Christian history, this is a great look at the early Churches and the early Church from the outside, through fresh eyes.

About the Author

Allison Trowbridge is a writer, speaker, and social entrepreneur who is passionate about empowering millennial women to impact their world. She has spent the past decade working against human trafficking and modern-day slavery, first at Not For Sale and presently with The Freedom Fund. She is a partner at Just Business, an impact investment firm addressing the root causes of slavery, and she advises social enterprises and nonprofits on strategy, branding, and partnerships. Allison is a MBA candidate at Oxford University and graduated from Westmont College in 2008. She currently lives in New York City.

A dose of real encouragement and timeless wisdom

Having lived through so many of the same experiences, pressures and expectations not too long ago, Twenty Two accurately depicts those life changing years. The book is filled with real adventures and encouragement. I found it to be relatable and funny but still hitting on all the key advice and life experiences that I want my little sisters and close friends to hear and learn from. A pre-ordered copy was waiting for my 21 year old sister, and I am ordering one for all the young women in my life that I live far from and need a boost of encouragement. I am also definitely gifting my soon to be 15 year old sister one because the advice is so timeless!

I highly recommend this lovely book. It's creative and inspiring. Allison has done a fantastic job delivering her deeply encouraging and moving thoughts and stories. A great read for anyone and everyone!

What a refreshing point of view about what it is like to be 22 with a hindsight look at what one wishes they had known. I plan to give a hard copy gift to every young woman (man) I think would benefit from this perspective.
