A good buy!

This is a good book to read for all those mothers who wants to make sweet candies for their children. all the preparation can be made in your kitchen with ease. very easy to understand this book has been a great addition to my confections book shelf. I have found the recipes to be very reliable.Book is good. Learned new things from this book about different types of fudges and candies. I will suggest this book to all who loves cooking . all the preparation can be made in your kitchen with ease. very easy to understand and it helps a lot. all in all a good book to read. The recipes are simply superb :)

Oh wow, 60 fudge recipes, this is something. I love fudges very very much. I have read this book thoroughly; I found many useful tips on fudge making. I also found many interesting and new recipes for me. Great! Thanks so much. I especially liked Caramel Peanut Fudge, Cherries and Chocolate Fudge, Chocolate Sour Cream Fudge and Fudge Bonbons. Flawless In Content...Killer in Formatting

This is a fantastic book, filled with great advice. I almost didn't give it 5-stars because of the poor formatting, but why create the karma. : ) If anyone at Shakti's publishing firm is reading this, much of the text appears squished together on a Kindle Fire. Much of the wording has no space between them, which makes it difficult to get through. It's probably that it was formatted way back when, before eReaders were really popular. It's to the point where at times you can't even read sections. But I obviously chugged through it because of the powerful messages. That says something about this book!

About the Author

Great learning value!

You should understand C# code before diving into this book. I tried online tutorials and nothing comes close to just reading and using this book! Although there were a few places where I had to use an online resource to figure out exactly what the author was talking about, it still supasses any other online XNA intro.

Best XNA book, code examples contain errors, where is the Quality Control?

I found this book on the web and still decided to buy it. The book is the easiest time I think I have ever had learning XNA, however, like all programming books it seems that only experienced coders who correct errors as they read are the ones in charge of editing and quality control.

For example, on page 46 it tells you to include a line of code that doesn't seem to make sense (private SpriteBatch spriteBatch = null;) in the Game1 code. This of course is redundant and cause the game not to compile. And.... naturally, the downloaded source code runs fine. Why? Because this line of code is not in the project. I imagine the XNA guru they had reviewing this book (how come they don't hand the book to a total newbie and say 'here, follow this book exactly and tell us when the code examples dont work') fixed the errors he seen on the fly without thinking ..oh, a total newbie won't know this is an obvious mistake..

But I can honestly say I have NEVER read a 'teach yourself' programming book with flawless code examples. And of course the downloaded source always works and you just have to compare your file with thier file and see what is different. The only positive note I can say about the poor state of quality control with newbie programming books in general is that in a way it teaches you to troubleshoot code. But, for someone who is completely new and doesn't pick up on these things it is very frustrating. I'm lucky now in that I have learned enough that I can fix these errors, but a few years ago I would have just tossed this book out of frustration when I do exactly as instructed and it still doesnt work.

To the people who write these books I have a suggestion....

If the person in charge of quality control has ever written a single line of code they are not qualified to review a book targeting newbies. Give the book to your spouse, neighbor, 12 year old, etc. who will quickly hand it back to you 5 times every chapter and say 'hey, I did what it said and got a bunch of errors', or 'hey, it assumes here on page whatever I know where to type this'.

Now, all that being said, this is a darn good book. The authors make XNA and XBOX programming about as simple as possible... the examples are explained very well and easy to follow. If you have gone through another C# teach yourself newbie book you should minimal trouble getting a game up and running in just an hour or so!

Best XNA book on the market

This is a great book to help you get started with XNA. I like the fact that it's straight and to the point with no fluff. Covers 2D and 3D game programming including skeletal animation. All sample code compiles and runs as advertised and is explained in detail. I had a bad experience with another XNA book so I'm glad I found this one.

About the Author
John-Henri Holmberg is the Edgar Award-nominated coauthor of the 2011 book The Tattooed Girl, about the Millenium novels and their author, Stieg Larsson, who was a personal friend. He has written books on science fiction, psychological thrillers, adult fantasy fiction, and film, and lectured on popular fiction, particularly crime and science fiction. For more than fifteen years he reviewed crime for Sweden's largest daily newspaper, which gained him the Jan Broberg Excellence in Criticism award, as well as election to the Swedish Crime Fiction Academy. He is now a full-time writer, translator, and editor, living with his family on the southern coast of Sweden.

This is a collection of mystery stories by some of the foremost writers in Sweden now.

It's terrific--a great way to sample some authors you may not know about.

It has some well-known ones--Stieg Larsson, Henning Mankell, Hakan Nesser, Sjowall/Wahloo--but also some not-so-well-known outside Sweden.

And in fact, in my view, the best stories are the ones by lesser-known authors.

The range is astounding. Everything from mystery/sci fi (Stieg Larsson) to history (Asa Larsson) to mystery/horror (Tove Alsterdal) to history/diary (Sara Stridsberg).

One problem I have with short stories is that when they are good they're too short, and when they are bad they're too long. That isn't the case here. The best one (and they are all VERY good) may be the shortest: Sara Stridsberg's "Diary Braun." This purports to be the words or thoughts of Eva Braun, Hitler's mistress, on the eve of her destruction. It isn't really a mystery, but it is brilliant and creepy and surprisingly sad.

My favorite, however, is "The Mail Run" by Asa Larsson. The mystery component is not the best part. The best part, as always with Asa Larsson, is the characterization. The relationship between the sheriff and his morose wife is heart-wrenching, touching, stunning.

A really fine collection. Get it and try it out.

A good collection of Swedish crime stories

If you have not yet started to read Swedish crime novels and would like an overview of what is out there before buying individual authors' books, this is a good place to start. Authors already well-known in the United States as well as authors mostly known in Sweden or Europe are represented. The editor has written an excellent summary of the history of Swedish crime writing during the past 100 years and how the modern authors follow this tradition.

enjoying Swedish crime fiction

Ever since "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and "Wallander", readers and viewers have been looking to Sweden for more "new" (to us) voices, new characters, and new settings in this idealized and still foreign land. (I've visited Sweden three times, and sometimes I think I should emigrate.) This place and their culture are at once familiar and strange, like a parallel world. These authors may not have written for their new global audience, but they have reached us. And now we have this sampler, and now we can hope for more.

There follow chapters in which the intricate molecular machinery that adapts the organisms metabolism and development to life in the soil, including antibiotic production, is illuminated by the DNA blueprint. Then come an up-to-the minute account of the use of genetic engineering to make novel, hybrid, antibiotics, and a topical description of techniques to learn the roles of the thousands of genes in a genome sequence, throwing a powerful light on the biology of the organisms and their harnessing for increasing antibiotic productivity. In the final chapter we return to the mycobacteria that cause tuberculosis and leprosy, the first actinomycetes to be discovered, and how methodology, in part derived from the study of the streptomycetes, is being applied to understand and control these still deadly pathogens.
