A summary look at one of America's most influential Founding Fathers

In political debates, all parties frequently invoke the Founding Fathers to support their claims or refute the claims of their opponents. One of the Founding Fathers who is seldom mentioned, though, but one of the most influential in terms of the current structure of the federal government, is Alexander Hamilton. The first Secretary of the Treasury and the mind behind the Federal Reserve, Hamilton was an illegitimate child who came to the colonies from the island of Nevis in the British West Indies as a teenager. Through his skill and tenacity he rose to prominence, thus making him an exemplar for the role that immigrants have always played in this country’s history; a fact that certain modern politicians seem to conveniently ignore.
Instaread’s Summary of Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow is an excellent overview of the broad-ranging biography of this important, but enigmatic man. It briefly explores Hamilton’s origins, takes a more detailed look at his activities after his arrival in America, up to his death in his mid-forties in a duel with Aaron Burr. Perfect instaread to learn a little bit of history

Instaread offered me a sample for my honest review. I am somewhat of a enigma, I love history, but I'm not a huge fan of reading. Even if I was a fan, I don't have enough hours in the day to read lengthy books. Thats where I've found Instaread summaries to be a real life saver. Some Instareads can only give you a flavor of what the real text is about (because the original topic may contain too much detail), but this one was just perfect in that it summarizes a summary of someone life (no text could ever be complete about a person). It gives me enough to get an understanding about this important person in history to the point that I don't feel I really need to dig deeper. It did, however, peak my interest in the federalist papers, which he helped author. Great little read on this important person!

Don't drop Hamiltons to read about this Hamilton

How would you like to pick the brain of one of the founding fathers? It would be pretty sweet, and I know all of us would enjoy it. With the current political torrent from the 2016 election in full swing, every side and candidate seems to understand the Constitution better than us. "Alexander Hamilton" is a sprawling biography of one of the most important figures in American history, and is based on copious original research. As a political theorist, activist, and cabinet member, Hamilton dedicated his life to the American dream.

This Instaread review captures the biography with a summary, analysis, insight into character relationships, and dissection of literary themes. It is a great read for anyone in the realm of political science, a student of US government, or a history buff. I really enjoyed the section that analyzed foreignness and patriotism. Because Hamilton was born in the West Indies, many of his contemporaries dismissed his relevance and undermined his trustworthiness. Despite Hamilton's foreign birth, he was as patriotic as anyone in his day. America's history of distrusting foreigners dismisses their ability to feel patriotism for this amazing country.

I highly recommend this review, it impacted my opinions on a man who influenced the Constitution. I was given a copy of this book to review.

If you dream, you need this book!

I loved this book. I felt it gave insight to both the good and bad in dreams and visions. Many Christian written books on dreams focus only on the positive side of things. Perry Stone brings to our attention God loves us, and wants to warn us of things to come so we can pray about them. He states God uses dreams and visions to warn us about attacks, and he can use them to confirm a situation in our life. He shares the rich history of dreams and visions though out the bible to give key insights to the future, for everyday life and decision making, and even for saving lives. Stone gives tons of scripture as always, and his own life experiences with dreams and visions.

I love Perry Stone's honesty in all of his books. For example, there is section on - "Are there female angels?" in this book. He give scriptures, experience, and opinion, but at the end he says- "We will know when we get to heaven for sure." Meaning, if he isn't sure about something, he isn't going to guess and give us incorrect information. Stone always looks for 100% biblical proof and facts. I did learn quite a few things from this book that I didn't know before, such as the law of "double dreams" and the history and spirits behind nightmares. He touches on several types of visions & dreams, such as day vs night dreaming, open eyed visions, and visions in our dreams. He gives in depth description of symbolism commonly used in dreams and visions, and why they are revealed in symbolism. He reminds us that, just because you had a dream several years ago, good or bad, does not mean these dreams or visions will not come to pass. There is an index in the back of the book on popular symbols found in dreams and visions. These symbols are mostly common sense, but he also shows scripture reference to where these symbols were used in the bible. I really appreciate the symbol index in this book, because I have referred back to it several times already. I wish he had given more symbols, but perhaps another book by him in the future will cover that. If you read the index you will see a lot of popular questions relating to dreams and visions, and Stone did a great job of answering them using God's word. He gives so much scripture and experience, it was really enjoyable & informative reading this book; I couldn't put it down!

Most people dream nightly so it seems fitting to own at least 1 book like this. Books I have read in the past on dreams and visions were more worldy, and gave psychic or generic meaning to symbolism. It's good to know it's okay to ponder and research about dreams and visions as a christian, without feeling like I am dabbling in the occult. I am definitely more aware of my dreams since reading this book. Stone lets us know we need to be just as aware of evil spiritual life from hell, as we do spiritual life from God in heaven. All in all this book has revived the importance of dreams to me, and how they are a blessing. Stone repeats this verse though out the book, Job 33 . There is not a more fitting verse for the subject of dreams and visions relating to Christians and non. I got saved after having a terrible warning dream at 17. I am now 26 and truly believe and can verify to the truths in this book. JOB 33:14-18 "For God may speak in one way, or in another, yet man may not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night when deep sleep falls on people, as they slumber in their beds. He may speak in their beds and terrify them with warnings to turn them from wrongdoing and keep them from pride, to preserve them from the pit, their lives from perishing by the sword."

This was worth the money, and I have since purchased 3 more of his books. If you like this book you will really like his book- Purging your house, Pruning your family tree. Both talk about things from God, and things from the enemy. Pay attention to your dreams!

How to Interpret Dreams and Visions

One of the things I like best about Perry Stone's books is that he writes on topics that not many Christian writers cover, but he always has a solid, biblical foundations for all of his books.

How to Interpret Dreams and Visions was a must read for me because this is a subject that I find fascinating, but reading secular books about dreams can lead the reader down a dangerous path away from God. Perry Stone educates and informs the reader about what God is trying to tell us through our dreams and he educates us well.

I loved this book and found each page more interesting than the one before. I really appreciate Perry taking the time to do some solid research and writing a book with a strong Christian message that can guide Christians to understand their dreams. I highly recommend this book. It is interesting, well written and very biblical. I will continue to read Perry Stone's books with confidence that he does not compromise on the Word of God.

I've read many books on the subject of dreams and visions (both secular and Christian) but this surpasses them all. It is so filled with scriptural references that it has a Holy Spirit annointing on it. I have had a life (since childhood) of having supernatural dreams and visions, and this book helped me realize I'm not alone! It gave me not only new understanding but peace and joy! Not About Hydroponics

This is a tough review to write, because the book is actually very good. The problem is the title. The title implies that hydroponics is an important focus of the book, but it isn't. The book has about 20 chapters, and only one, the 13th is about hydroponics. In addition the chapter contains only vague details about how to setup and use hydroponics. The book would be much better titled: "Gardening Indoors", then it could get the ranking it deserves.

Disorganized, confusing, and contains contradictory information.

This book fails to impress. I have spent a few hours a day for 2 weeks reading all I can find online about indoor gardening and hydroponics but I cannot say I would have saved time buying this book and reading it instead. In 2 hours of reading this book I was more than 1/3 thru it and I had learned nothing that I had not already learned for free. In addition, the material in the book is presented in a haphazard fashion and much of the material is repeated twice or more times. I would say this book is about 10-20% useful information that you could have found for free with a few internet searches, and about 80-90% fluff.

There are some sections where the pics and captions will tell you all you need to know but then the author needlessly rewrites the same info in confusing blocks of text after it. Then there are other blocks of text that severely need informative pictures and captions to visually illustrate key points, however the pictures and captions in these instances either don't exist or are of poor quality.

Other sections contain purely confusing or contradicting advice. For example, the author recommends putting seedlings under HID light to provide a drying element, but then later says seedlings should be grown under fluorescent lights until flowering.

There is no uniform voice or tone to the book, it just feels like a regurgitation of info that the author hurriedly skimmed before cutting and pasting it in the book.

So in summary this book will waste your time and money, give you no clear path to how to start an indoor garden hydroponically or otherwise, and leave you confused by its terrible explanation of important topics like PAR, and pruning, all the while providing no logical progression of the series of events that must take place in order to nurture a seed to a full term vegetable harvest.

Their is no info on LED lights... which I, and may other people own

Also the book has many ADs, Yes you heard it... advertisements

At least 10 pages of advertisements for various hydroponic products in the book... not sure why I should pay for this

Since their classic volume The Breakdown of Democratic Regimes was published in 1978, Juan J. Linz and Alfred Stepan have increasingly focused on the questions of how, in the modern world, nondemocratic regimes can be eroded and democratic regimes crafted. In Problems of Democratic Transition and Consolidation, they break new ground in numerous areas. They reconceptualize the major types of modern nondemocratic regimes and point out for each type the available paths to democratic transition and the tasks of democratic consolidation. They argue that, although "nation-state" and "democracy" often have conflicting logics, multiple and complementary political identities are feasible under a common roof of state-guaranteed rights. They also illustrate how, without an effective state, there can be neither effective citizenship nor successful privatization. What leads to democray and consolidation

As the title suggests, Linz and Stepan examine democratic transition and consolidation. Linz and Stepan argue that a democratic transition is completed when the relevant actors agree on the "the rules of the game." These rules include those regarding elected government: when and how the government is formed through free and fair elections, when and how the government has de facto authority to create new policies, and when the branches of government no longer have to share power with other bodies. When the government abides by the rules developed, Linz and Stepan would argue that it has become a democracy. Consolidation is achieved when the democratic system is viewed as "the only game in town," and the majority of the public subscribes to those institutions. Additionally, Linz and Stepan see a consolidated democracy as not simply a regime, but rather a system of interaction parts. These parts include civil society, political society, rule of law, bureaucracy, and an institutionalization of economic society.

The authors use a number of explanatory variables when examining democratic transition and consolidation. These variables are divided into three categories. The first, macrovariables, include stateness, and prior regime type. The second, actor variables, includes the leadership base of the prior regime type, and who initiates and controls oppositions. Lastly, context variables include international influences, the political economy of legitimacy, and the constitution-making environment.

Linz and Stepan argue that "democracy requires statehood." Without a state' ability to use coercive force, tax, and implement a judicial system, the five arenas of a consolidated democracy will not be achieved. However, it must be noted that state and nation are two different concepts. If there is conflict between the state and nations under its control, achieving democracy will be difficult. This leads to problems of legitimacy for the state. In order to address this, the concept of citizenship is imperative. The author's write, "there can be no complex modern democracy without voting, no voting without citizenship, and no official membership in the community of citizens without a state to certify membership" (28).

The authors also suggest that the role played by prior regime type shape the paths available for transition, and what tasks remain to achieve consolidation. The authors move beyond the classic three regime typology and examine authoritarian, totalitarian, post-totalitarian, and sultanistic regimes. L & S argue that the ways in which the previous regimes structured pluralism, ideology, leadership, and mobilization affect the paths available to democratic transition. Linz and Stepan see five paths with can be taken towards democratic transition: the formation of pacts, defeat in war, interim government created after regime termination but not brought forth by the old regime, a military led coup, and some regime specific transition paths. Depending on the previous regime type, some paths are more likely than others.

Additionally L & S suggest that the character of the state elite affects democratic transition and consolidation. They examine four types of elites: hierarchal military, nonhierarchal military, civilian elite, and sultanistic elites. A hierarchal military (authoritarian) may be usurped by the military-as-institution who views extrication from the military government as in their best interests - a return to civilian rule. However, during the consolidation phase, the old regime elite may enforce "reserve domains" of control which will not allow the new regime to consolidate. A nonhierarchal military elite is better for both transition and consolidation. They are likely to fall to a democratic transition when they come into problems running the country. Also, they are likely to be seen as operating outside the military sphere which means they are likely to be punished by the state/military hierarchy. In the case of civilian leadership (post-totalitarian), they are in possession of the symbolic and institutional capacities to initiate and manage ad democratic transition. In the consolidation phase, they are likely to see the benefit of working within the new system as opposed to fighting it. In sultanistic leadership, the regime is so personalized, that the overthrow of the sultan quickly destroys the regime. However, unless democratic elections are held quickly, and democratic institutions developed, the chances of consolidation are weak.

Under the actor variable category, L & S examine the impact of who initiates and controls the transition on democratic transition and consolidation. Transitions initiated by civil society, armed revolution, or a nonhierarchal military led coup tend to see the ruling institutions taken over by an interim government. This interim government can either have a democratic or nondemocractic agenda. If elections are held quickly, democracy can arise. If the interim government simply makes decreases based on an assumed mandate, democracy is unlikely. Because interim governments often don't appear from a hierarchal military, or through regime led changes, democracy is unlikely to appear.

Linz and Stepan also examine the context within which the transition occurs. Of particular interest are various international influences. One international factor which can influence transition and consolidation is the use of force. A nondemocractic country can militarily overthrow a weaker democratic state, or a regional hegemon can crush democratic uprisings in its periphery. The hegemon (democratic or nondemocractic) can also use incentives or sanctions to shape the political path nations in the periphery undertake. Outside of force, the "spirit of the times," i.e. democracy / communism, or diffusion can shape political transitions.

The political economic context can also shape transition and consolidation. For example, extended periods of economic prosperity can weaken nondemocractic regimes. Prosperity may make the coercive system unnecessary. Also, economic prosperity expands the middle class which leads to increased political demands. Although economic prosperity doesn't weaken the democratic regimes, economic downturns affect both. Still, because the democratic regime has a greater level of legitimacy then the nondemocractic regimes, it is more insulated from down turns.

Lastly, Linz and Stepan see the constitution-making environment leads to the success or failure of democratic transition and consolidation.

Exactly what I was looking for.

I've been eyeing this book for a while on the author's website but it didn't have an adequate description and no preview so I waited. Amazon lets me return if I don't like a book so I grabed it here. It arrived in 2 days with Amazon prime so I'm happy. It has just what it says. 101 medicines for health and life....from diabetes to financial success. He also has the Yoruba and English name for the plant. It is based on Odus so he has the odus and the Ofo ase included. It is geared toward Awos (Babalawos and Iyanifas) and not the lay person. You would need to do what Awos do when making the medicine so if you don't know what that is.... It's not for you. Its not a book of herbal teas or a book about quick spells that anyone can do.. So don't think you are going to buy the book and play priest without training. You wouldn't even know what you are looking at.
