Although person-to-group bonds may have become harder to sustain, they continue to play a vital role in maintaining healthy interactions in larger social groups from companies to communities. Drawing on classical and contemporary sociology, organizational psychology, and behavioral economics, Social Commitments in a Depersonalized World shows how affiliations—particularly those that involve a profound emotional component—can transcend merely instrumental or transactional ties and can even transform these impersonal bonds into deeply personal ones.

The authors study the structures of small groups, corporations, economic transactions, and modern nation-states to determine how hierarchies, task allocation, and social identities help or hinder a group’s vitality. They find that such conditions as equal status, interdependence, and overlapping affiliations figure significantly in creating and sustaining strong person-to-group bonds. Recurring collaboration with others to achieve common goals—along with shared responsibilities and equally valued importance within an organization—promote positive and enduring feelings that enlarge a person’s experience of a group and the significance of their place within it. Employees in organizations with strong person-to-group ties experience a more unified, collective identity. They tend to work more cost effectively, meet company expectations, and better regulate their own productivity and behavior.

The authors make clear that the principles of their theory have implications beyond business. With cultures pulling apart and crashing together like tectonic plates, much depends on our ability to work collectively across racial, cultural, and political divides. Emotional Ties

The world is rapidly changing. Can the present social order survive the changes? The authors posit that social cohesion at the macro level requires strong person-to-group commitments at the micro level--from the bottom up. But in a market-oriented social world such as ours has become, the ties of people to social units tend to be loose, unsettled, and problematic. To be significant, personal ties to groups must have an emotional component. Affective bonds of people to groups are essential to the stability of the social order because people are affective beings who think and decide and act with their emotions. What makes this book different from others of its type is its emphasis on affect, the emotional component of social commitments. "The centrality of the emotional dimension to human lives."

On the micro level, as the world becomes more depersonalized, person-to-person relationships tend to become shallower, looser, less often extending beyond the merely transactional. The result is emotional isolation. "People today are leading more individualized and privatized lives." Can new social networks such as the Internet replace the person-to-person relationships of the past? The authors believe they have potential to do so. "The loss-of-community themes of today are anchored ... in illusion and myth."

This book extends from the micro to the macro, to social units of any size, from the smallest groups to the largest nation-states. It is about person-to-group commitments, how they can be created and sustained by giving persons shared tasks and responsibilities that engender in them feelings of solidarity with the group; and it is about person-to-person ties at the micro level. It offers a theory of social commitments that addresses the micro foundations of person-to-group ties, and it suggests practical applications of that theory.

A scholarly work of interest to academics, this is a challenging read because it deals with abstract topics. It assumes that the reader will have some familiarity with sociological jargon. Indexed and lavishly sourced.

It deals with the most fundamental issue of social solidarity. They dare to tackle the most substantial question--what is it in interaction that sustains this sense of solidarity and cohesion? In the world where too many cry that communities are lost, that identity has gone stale, that social solidarity has become benign, this book shows us that interaction and solidarity are not only still possible but remain a dynamic force of social life. This book is one of the most significant additions to the behavioral sciences in many years. It is a fascinating read for everyone.

The dinos (all familiar types, named at the end of the book) are rendered in vivacious colors and sprawl across the double-page spreads with the looming, comic presence of Janet Stevens's animals. Guests and host gather round the grill on Sunday for hot dogs and hamburgers, served by a goateed Tyrannosaurus Rex clad in an apron and chef's hat. Good fun for Bernard Most fans.

Ages 3-6. Teaching the days of the week is the excuse for a string of dinosaurs romping through this picture book. Monday, a pudgy, green dinosaur ruins breakfast, and Tuesday, a strange, scaly dinosaur pops out of the closet and upsets the clothes. The rest of the week is no better as one unruly dinosaur after another bursts in to spoil a little girl's day. By the end of the week, things settle down, and they all take a much-needed rest on Sunday. There are better books introducing the days of the week, but this one can be enjoyed just for its eye-popping dinosaurs in striking colors and patterns. Denia Hester

beautifully illustrated

My 5 year old son loves this book and asks to have it read to him again and again. The story is a silly rhyme that helps teach the days of the week. The illustrations are clever and very detailed-- he always seems to find something new in each of the pictures. This book nicely blends children's love for dinosaurs with delightful situations. We are ordering another copy today to donate to our school.

Propulsively rhythmic, deliciously illustrated

Linda Manning's "Dinosaur Days" beautifully dovetails a propulsive rhythm in verse with the vivacious and colorful illustrations of Vlasta van Kampen.
The unnamed dark-haired girl who appears on every page has to deal with a succession of ruder and ruder dinosaurs--one appearing each day, and doing everything from squashing her morning toast to spilling the laundry detergent to marauding through the garden! The little girl is patient and sweet with each successive rude dinosaur guest, trying to teach them manners and finally succumbing for a dinosaur fest in the backyard, complete with barbecue!
The illustrations are just sumptuously colorful and detailed, and the text lots of fun to read aloud to your favorite dinosaur lover.

Not a great book

This third book in the Yashim series shows us, as usual, that Mr. Goodwin is a thorough historical researcher, so the great tidbits of life in both Istanbul and Venice constitute a true pleasure and result in my rating of two stars. As a novelist, however, Mr. Goodwin is showing himself to be less and less skilled. This plot is far too tricky, even for Mr. Goodwin to untangle. Furthermore, this author repeatedly violates the basic rule of good novel writing: "SHOW the reader, don't tell the reader." In his first two novels of this series, Mr. Goodwin made us really love Yashim, his cohorts and his exotic setting, so we look forward to new Yashim tales. Obviously, readers worldwide do, as well. But Mr. Goodwin needs to stop writing novels by the seat of his pants, now that he has a good series going, and start mastering the craft of good written storytelling. His loyal readers deserve much better plotting and writing. Finally, I think Mr. Goodwin is probably pretty lucky that Donna Leon has not sued him for shamelessly stealing her famous Venetian cop, Guido Brunetti, for this particular book and concocting a near-carbon-copy ... named Brunelli, would you believe? Please. Plagiarism is just not clever or amusing.

Interesting Twists and Turns

After the blunder of The Evil Eye, the author is back in form. His charming style, after missing in action in “The Evil Eye”, is in full view again. By setting the story in Venice, a city between land and sea and between East and West, it gives the author a chance to show off the history and the beauty of Istanbul’s sister-city. To give Yashim a rest, the first half of the story focused on his best friend, Palewski, the Polish ambassador without a country. But, the poor Palewski seem to have lost his analytical power he had displayed in the author’s previous books. His unexpected commission and vacation in Venice seemed to have turned him into a trusting simpleton. Fortunately, Yashim came to the rescue just in time and solved the mystery with his usual deft mind and sharp insight.

It is strange that, despite being a eunuch, Yashim seemed to have had intimate close encounters with ravishing foreign females in every story. It just goes to show that sex is more than just intercourse. As there was no danger of conception, in the harem parlance, it’s “vegetarian diet”.

The author must really love cooking and dedicated many pages describing Turkish recipes and cooking instructions in every one of his books. It seems that every dish involved dicing onions and mincing garlic, then you add lemon juice. In French cooking, there is a saying, “When in doubt, add more wine.” In Mediterranean cooking, the saying is. “When in doubt, add more garlic.” With garlic and lemon, of course everything tastes good.

I was disappointed that the famous eight-pointed stars that made the endless knots and links, popular in Islamic decorations and the main pattern symbol of the story, was not on the cover. Instead, the cover showed a design of repeating squares and triangles making isolated pyramids, not links nor knots, which has nothing to do with Islam.

There is a minor confusion here – In his prior book “The Evil Eye” which took place about 1839, the bridge linking Istanbul and Pera was completed and an opening celebration was held. But, in this book which took place around 1840, they were just beginning to build the bridge. Did the bridge of 1839 collapse?

Exciting mystery, based on historical fact.

This is one of a series about an Ottoman detective, Hashim, who has been an advisor to the Sultan, and who leaves Topkapi Palace to lead a private life. But since he has been a great advisor and problem solver to the Sultan, he is called back from time to time to do something the sultan needs doing. In this case, a portrait of a previous sultan is missing, and the present Sultan has been advised that it might be in Venice. So Hashim goes to Venice , which had long been a trading partner of the Ottomans, and tries to find out (1) does such a painting exist? and (2 ) and where it it?
In the course of reading this series (the Snake Stone, the Janissary Tree, etc...) you learn a lot about Istanbul in the last century, the different nationalities who made up the population, the water system, the legendary Janasseries, etc) The writer, Jason Goodwin, is a historian, who wrote a very good back about the Ottomans, and obviously knows Istanbul well. He's a great storyteller - I've enjoyed all these books tremendously.

The book is good but the translation isnt!

I really appreciate the detail of the book. It's one of the few books on BI that I have read with such thorough explanations. HOWEVER, the translation from German is extremely poor!!! I can speak German and could see that at places the text has been translated literally: with the verbs at the end of the sentence, which is typical for German. Very disappointing and also very annoying! At places you need to know prior knowledge of the subject to grasp the meaning, it's that bad! Recommend it only to people who already know BI pretty well. If it wasn't for the translation, I would give it 4.5 stars(although not technically possible), as Authorizations/Security and Data Mining part/APD are totally missing, as well as most of Reporting (for which i highly recommend Peter Jones' SAP Business Information Warehouse Reporting). For those going for SAP certification: this book, Jones' and help.sap.com for Security and APD is more than enough (that is if you dont have certification materials, which arent that good anyway). Hope that helps!

Best book for Backend (Data Staging and Modelling)

This book is exclusively about the SAP BW backend, i.e. no reporting. As another reviewer has already stated Peter Jones' book is the best for the front end.
This book covers all the important topics regarding data modelling, staging, including quite a lot about improving the performance. The amount of useful detail is impressive. It is very practical, i.e. solution oriented. You can often use the explainations to solve your immediate problems. It is true that the English translation has been conducted poorly. But after having read some other books (Eggert) I think 5 stars are well deserved.

Easy to read and to understand

The Reuters Financial Series allow almost every person with a simple knowledge of economy and mathematics to understand the stock market. It contains a lot of informaton and practical examples and the graphical look allow us an easy understanding of the topics. The only problem is the exercises and the examples are based on the "Reuters Markets" program, so if you dont't have it the book becomes a little useless.
