Yan Huang's highly successful textbook on pragmatics - the study of language in use - has been fully revised and updated in this second edition. It includes a brand new chapter on reference, a major topic in both linguistics and the philosophy of language. Chapters have also been updated to include new material on upward and downward entailment, current debates about conversational implicature, impoliteness, emotional deixis, contextualism versus semantic minimalism, and the elimination of binding conditions.
The book draws on data from English and a wide range of the world's languages, and shows how pragmatics is related to the study of semantics, syntax, and sociolinguistics and to such fields as the philosophy of language, linguistic anthropology, and artificial intelligence. Professor Huang includes exercises and essay topics at the end of each chapter, and offers guidance and suggested solutions at the end of the volume. Written by one of the leading scholars in the field, this new edition will continue to be an ideal textbook for students of linguistics, and a valuable resource for scholars and students of language in philosophy, psychology, anthropology, and computer science.

Review
Review from previous edition: "[A]n excellent textbook in pragmatics. ... Huang's achievement is impressive"
--Journal of Pragmatics
"This new publication by Professor Huang ... gives a very thorough introduction to this subdiscipline in linguistics, which is becoming increasingly interwined with psychology and neurolinguistics. ... I would therefore recommend this introductory text to any postgraduates or researchers in
psycholinguistics"
--The Psychologist
"[T]he book is very thorough in its coverage of topics within the field. Mindful of its student audience, it also has extensive study questions, examples, and glossaries. My overall impression is that it is a valuable textbook to anyone in the field of pragmatics"
--The Linguist List

Pragmatics is the study of how language is used in real life. It is about hands-on language use
By Sussman
.
Pragmatics concerns, first and foremost, actions and events that necessarily take place in context as actual actions, that is, sociohistorically contextualized distinctive happenings.
This is a text, which also introduces the various sub disciplines in linguistics. This is the science of the mind; in relation to the neurobiological factors, which facilitate humans to acquire, use, comprehend and produce language. For contemporary Pragmatics there are two schools of thought Anglo-American and Continental European.
The author Yan Huang has fully revised and updated this second edition, as the field of Pragmatics has rapidly developed, since his first publication. There is the addition of new chapter on Reference and is of import in philosophy of language and linguistics. The ‘target’ audience of this academic work is aimed at; second and third year undergraduates in Linguistics, postgraduate students and those researchers that work/study in the field of psycholinguistics. That said its scope reaches out to other interconnected fields such as philosophy, psychology, anthropology, and computer science (artificial intelligence). In the case of computer science, take the example of the internet and Language Education and its impact on language development.
There is excellent referencing as guides for further study. It also has extensive study examples, and glossaries. There is also section that is titled as “Suggested solutions and exercises”, which provides a run through of the topics covered and their application. In summation this title is very much an academic work aimed at certain ‘tier’ of student/researcher, as previously mentioned and not a casual read into the field of Pragmatics.
