From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. At the start of Lckberg's haunting U.S. debut, the first of her seven novels set in the Swedish coastal town of Fjllbacka, biographer Erica Falck returns home to sort through her deceased parents' belongings and work on her next book. But this is not the same hometown she grew up in. Summer tourists are turning the former fishing village into a thriving resort, and Erica's controlling brother-in-law is pressuring her to cash in by selling the family home. The apparent suicide of childhood friend Alexandra Wijkner contributes to Erica's grief. Once inseparable, they drifted apart before Alex's family abruptly moved away, and Erica feels compelled to write a novel about why the beautiful Alex would kill herself. Lckberg skillfully details how horrific secrets are never completely buried and how silence can kill the soul. A parallel between the town's downward spiral and the fate of one of Fjllbacka's wealthiest families adds texture. (June)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Murray, who has translated the works of both Henning Mankell and Stieg Larsson, adds another Scandinavian crime star to his rsum with this subtle rendering of Lackberg’s debut, a number-one best-seller in Sweden and the winner of France’s 2008 Grand Prix de Littrature Policire for Best International Crime Novel. Erica, a thirtysomething biographer struggling with her latest book, deals with her grief over her parents’ untimely death and her mixed feelings about returning to her hometown after years in Stockholm. On a whim, she visits her childhood friend Alex only to find her dead in the bathtub. The grieving parents ask Erica to write an article about Alex for a local newsletter, which forces her to try to make sense of her friend’s life and death. As Erica delves deeper into Alex’s past, she begins to work with a local police officer, Patrik, another childhood friend, and together they uncover secrets that some people would greatly prefer were left secret. Set in winter in the coastal town of Fjallbacka, the novel uses the off-season quiet in the small village—many of the houses are empty—to create a chilling atmosphere in which silence drives suspense. This excellent thriller is a must-read for fans of Scandinavian crime literature and will especially appeal to those who enjoy Asa Larsson’s Rebecka Martinsson novels, as Rebecka and Erica are of a similar age and both return to the remote villages of their childhoods. --Jessica Moyer

Review
“The hottest crime genre of the moment is Nordic noir and Swedish writer Camilla Lckberg (who shares Stieg Larsson’s translator) is one of the reasons. As with all Scandinavian murder mysteries, it’s darker, bleaker, and the plot far more sinister than similar American fare. Larsson fans who give Lckberg’s novel a chance to seduce them will be rewarded.” (USA Today )

“[T]he writing is highly atmospheric and the pacing keeps the pages turning. Fjllbacka itself is a compelling presence in the narrative, an ideal setting for this small-town murder mystery.” (Debra Ginsberg - Shelf Awareness )

“Ingenious. Strong portrayals and ice-cold suspense.” (Metropol [France] )

“Starred Review. Haunting...Lckberg skillfully details how horrific secrets are never completely buried and how silence can kill the soul.” (Publishers Weekly )

“Camilla Lckberg has written seven blockbuster novels in her native Swedish but, until now, no one has published any of them in the United States. Now Pegasus Books has stepped forward.” (The New York Times )

“A top-class Scandinavian writer.” (The Times [London] )

“Chilly, deceptive and lucid, just like the icy environment it describes.” (The Literary Review )

“The plot is simply superb. A book that you can’t put down.” (Sala Allehanda (Sweden) )

“A more than welcome addition to the growing ranks of Scandinavian fiction. With her sharp eye for emotional nuances and psychological insight, Fjallbacka and its crimes and people will soon be as popular here as they are in her native Sweden.” (Peter Robinson, author of All the Colors of Darkness )

“Heart-stopping—a masterclass in Scandinavian crime writing.” (Val McDermid, author of the Dr. Tony Hill and Carol Jordan mysteries )

Love mysteries?
By AZN8TV
I bought this book on the strength of a review published in a magazine.

I had not heard of Camilla Lackberg, but am a great fan of well written mysteries.

WOW! I was sutured into the characters and the stories from the first page.

It was the equivalent of being on a literary roller-coaster. The characters develop slowly, yet tantalizingly. It reminded me of that first bite of an exquisite chocolate, the last bar of it ever produced. You want to keep eating it, but you know it's going to end and will be no more. With each tiny bite, you know it's something special. So, you savor each and every bite.

Quite honestly, I was kept in suspense until the last pages. This is rare for me. Usually I can figure out where the book is headed by mid-way. I was humbled by this book.

If you love a good mystery novel, this will delight you in ways previously unknown.

The great news...this is her first book in this series. I can't wait to read the rest.

Good story, interesting places, good read
By Marcos K X Bastos
This first book on the Patrick Hedstrom / Erica Falck series was my first Camilla Lckberg book and I liked it. Good read, not so heavy. It is interesting to read a story set in such a different place, and I like to find places in a map as I read, not only regions and cities, but the actual roads and streets. This is possible because they are the real ones in the book. Of course we know Gothenburg, but how else would anyone hear of Fjllbacka, Tanumshede and Uddevalla? Great for armchair travellers.

I've read a lot of reviews with complaints about the story and its supposed flaws, such as not giving all the clues at once, etc. However, none of them seem to impair the story for me. There may be authors who go by theses rules, that's OK too. Reading would then become a clue game. But literature has other ways to involve the reader and create suspense. Not giving every information, by the way, is also a common resource in TV and movies. The book kept me interested and I never wanted to put it down.I'll be reading other books from this author.

Okay story, very rough writing
By Kathryn Chappell
If you are looking for a mindless read and don't put too much stock in quality of writing, this book might be for you. Unfortunately, I had just finished reading Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series, which are impeccably written, and the contrast to this book's extremely inauthentic dialogue made it difficult for me to finish.

The author struggles to navigate the slow unveil of clues within the mystery, instead having one of the characters find a clue then wait for as many as 100 pages to reveal it to the reader. It felt like an amateur attempt.

Also, I felt zero investment in the love story within the book. It was telegraphed from the moment the character was introduced, and the attempt at creating tension as it developed made me cringe over and over again.

There were a few surprises I didn't see coming in the book, but mostly I feel that was because the writing kept me from truly being interested in the story as it unfolded.

I would recommend skipping this unless you are looking for a completely mindless read.
