Charles Marie Georges Huysmans, m�s conocido como Joris-Karl Huysmans (Par�s, 1848 - ib�dem, 1907), fue un escritor franc�s. Los trabajos de Huysmans expresan un disgusto por la vida moderna y un profundo pesimismo, especialmente su obra m�s conocida, A contrapelo (� rebours, 1884).
Descendiente de una larga l�nea de pintores flamencos, Huysmans tuvo una juventud dolorosa (su madre se volvi� a casar con un hombre de negocios, protestante: Jules Og). Empez� a estudiar leyes, tras ingresar como funcionario del Ministerio del Interior.
Public� por su cuenta en 1874 un conjunto de poemas titulado Le Drageoir � �pices. Sus primeras novelas, como Marta (1876) y Las hermanas Vatard (1879), estaban inspiradas por el Naturalismo de �mile Zola. Acud�a a las veladas del grupo de M�dan, para el que colabor� con un cuento, La mochila al hombro sobre sus recuerdos militares. El libro colectivo publicado: Las veladas de M�dan constituye de hecho el manifiesto del naturalismo.
Empieza a mover su perspectiva. Escribe unos Croquis parisiens de val�a. Nuevas obras como En m�nage, 1881, y al a�o siguiente A vau l'eau (A la deriva o Aguas abajo) est�n llenas de vidas ins�pidas, muy contempor�neas e implacablemente descritas. En A contrapelo (1884), con distintas traducciones, famosa novela que se convirti� en modelo del decadentismo m�s exquisito, rompe claramente con la est�tica naturalista; pues las tendencias al artificio por parte del hiperest�sico, descontentadizo e hipercr�tico protagonista, Des Esseintes, son otros tantos impulsos hacia un ideal de vida.
