Through approaches as wide ranging as performing their own recipes, energizing silences, raging against war and rape, and inviting the public to inscribe their naked bodies, theatre artists have used performance as a site to insert themselves between the physicality of their female presence and the liminality of their disrupting the role of the feminine. Capturing that place of liminality, a neither-here-nor-there place that is often unsafe, where the established order is overturned by acts as banal as raising a plant, women have written and performed and disrupted their way through one hundred years of theatre history, even within the constraints of a variably rigid and usually unsympathetic social order. Creating a feminist femininity, they have reinscribed their place in the culture and provided models for their audiences to do the same. This book is so desperately needed. I am hoping that many universities and colleges will pick it up to study in theater classes (where women are decidedly and shamefully ignored) as well as in Feminist Studies. There have been several books in the last years about the Women’s Theater movement of the 1970s and ‘80s but none with such a broad look at a whole century of women theater artists, which allows us all to experience ourselves as part of an important heritage of truly amazing women. Between 1967 and 2004 John Peel picked over 2000 bands to come and record over 4000 sessions to be played on his radio show. Many were young and had never been in a recording studio before, for some it was the start of an illustrious career, for others it was the only recognition their musical talent ever got.

For over 35 years the cream of British musical talent made the journey to the BBC's studio in Maida Vale, from Pink Floyd to Pulp, the Small Faces to the Smiths. And because John Peel was so respected his sessions took on a legendary status - they were a rite of passage that every new band wanted to go through.

Unfettered by commerical pressure the Peel Sessions were a unique British institution - an archive of music that reflects one man's passion for finding and encouraging new music.

Jarvis Cocker writing about his first Peel Session aged 18 (Wayne the drummer was 15):

'We travelled down to Maida Vale in a van driven by a very strange man we'd contacted via a card pinned to the Virgin record shop noticeboard. We'd had to borrow lots of equipment from a band called The Naughtiest Girl Was a Monitor 'cause we didn't have enough stuff of our own. The session was to be produced by Dale Griffin, who used to be the drummer in Mott the Hoople; I seem to remember that he was wearing cowboy boots.

I think the crisis point came when Wayne was attempting to get a home-made synth-drum to work that a friend of his at school had made out of a rubber burglar-alarm mat and an old electronic calculator - Dale Griffin looked at this 15-year-old kid crouching on the floor bashing what looked like a doormat with some wires coming out of it and just put his head in his hands. But to his credit, the session did get finished and after it, everything else started for me...'

This book is the definitive guide to John Peel's career at the BBC as well as being a decent history of popular music in Great Britain from 1967-2004. It describes the history of the live session and the role of "needle time" in its development. The characters at the BBC are brilliantly brought to life - their motivations for pushing Peel around the schedule, trying to eliminate the show, etc. And how Peel survived it all to become universally acknowledged as the best DJ in rock history. And it's a damned good read!
That's the first part. The second part is page after page of data on each and every show, who played, where it was broadcast from, you name it. In truth, I've only skimmed the second part so I can't give a detailed account.

About the Author
Susan Nees graduated with honors from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She has also received the American Institute of Graphic Arts Award (AIGA). Her artwork can be found at the Low Library of Columbia University and in special collections at Princeton, as well as in other collections. Susan lives with her husband, her two children, Jodo the Dog, and a small flock of chickens in Georgia. MISSY’S SUPER DUPER ROYAL DELUXE is her first children’s book series.

Good combination of history and realistic fiction!

While I was not a fan of previous Missy books, I like this one. I think this plot is something that kids can relate to well. Most children want to be the star of the show and not have a non-speaking role as a peanut. I also like that the author has woven in some factual information about George Washington Carver (a person on our state's testing!) into this fictional story. Students will learn about him in spite of themselves!

These books are great transitional books for children who think they are to big for picture books (even though no one is ever to big for picture books!) but yet they are not quite ready to handle a hefty no picture chapter book. They don't look babyish either and the illustrations are in full color. This particular book uses a lot of speech bubbles so graphic novel/comic book loving kids will enjoy that as well.

Perfect for my 1st Grader

My first grade daughter is an accelerated reader and this series of books is perfect for her. She tends to read the Super Duper Royal Deluxe books in about an hour. They really captivate her attention, have cute illustrations and are enjoyable for me for the times I read along with her. If your child is on the cusp of reading chapter books or already is reading chapter books but not the too sophisticated ones, give this series a try. I would probably just recommend this book for girls, but boys could potentially like it, too.

Fabulous illustrations combine with a funny story that is sure to pleasure both children and adults. There is something new to find in this book with each reading. Highly recommended for new readers and parents who are tired of the same-old-same-old.

great for musicians new to bass

If you already can read music, but are new to the bass, this is a fantastic book -- there are 52 exercises, beginner to advanced, with exercises to be done one week at a time. The book starts right off with walking lines of 8th notes and then quickly gets into 16th notes w/syncopation etc.

Chapter 1. Chromatics (exercises 1-10)
Chapter 2. Scales & Arpeggios (exercises 11-20)
Chapter 3. String Crossing (exercises 21-30)
Chapter 4. Slapping & Popping (exercises 31-40)
Chapter 5. Advanced Bass (exercises 41-52)

I'm on week 8 of 52 and so far the weekly pieces have been really great for getting my reading chops back up to speed. I do 10-20 minutes every morning and slowly work out the kinks all week long. By the time Saturday and Sunday roll around I'm playing it faster and faster with the metronome, looking to get all the way through error free, and the included CD is very helpful cause you can play along with the author. Very good learning tool for me so far, I highly recommend it. Not for complete beginners though, some of the rhythms are already getting quite tricky and I spent a lot of years reading music. Worth the effort though, I'd imagine having a teacher walking you through the tougher passages would help. And of course you can listen to the CD and see how it is supposed to sound but the real challenge is getting it right without any help from your ears.

diverse exercises for bass book

I like this book because it covers something that has been plagueing me: coming to grips with cromaticism and string crossing (two of the chapters).

I would suggest this book to intermediate to advanced bass musicians. Quite a few of these pieces (usually two pages in length, with beginning, middle and return to/end sections)will take some time to memorize.. no banging on the root here (not that there's anything wrong with that, at times).

The chapter on scales sings(melodic)pretty good. The chapter on slap and pop has grown on me.

Well worth the price.
