Gilles Lavigne Kyoshi has been practicing Karate since he was 13 years old. His forty-three continuous years of experience in the Martial Arts has given him a unique perspective on the basics and higher principles of Karate. These principles he shares have been taught to him by some celebrated and acclaimed Japanese, Canadian and American Masters. He currently holds an 8th Dan black belt in Karate Shotokan and is the founder and head of the Canadian Martial Arts Association. He also has a black belt in Chito Ryu style of Karate. Lavigne Kyoshi states that Karate-do is a catch phrase that describes a self-actualization process. He asserts that the Karate life consists of awakening consciousness or awareness at different stages in our lives on the Physical, Mental, and Spiritual dimensions. It has been his observation that self-actualization processes in the Martial Arts, Tai Chi, Yoga and countless others far too many to mention, have been created to help followers gradually peel away at the different internal and external layers of their make-up to uncover his unique ‘Self’. The objective of this book as he points out is to guide karate-kas towards a continuous flow of awakening consciousness and awareness on all levels of their being. One must have clarity of perception in order to have pure intention. Pure intention is the guiding principle to live a virtuous and honorable life. The book is intended to be as kind of a road map, a guide along a trek and journey through a process of bringing together energies from all levels of our being to this focal point of pure intention in time and space. This process is called Kime.

Karate...a most complex and challenging journey
By Sb Herman
I believe one needs to read widely, do lots of research, and ponder each day on the many great mysteries of KARATE, including regular practice under the guidance of a proven master

I was interested to find " absolute kime?" ..but even my basic understanding of "kime" has certainly not been enhanced ...so I wonder where I missed the message?

But this is my humble opinion?....you need to check it out for yourself

Cultural Writing. Essays. Latino/Latina Studies. Rooted in Gloria Anzaldua's experience as a Chicana, a lesbian, an activist, and a writer, the groundbreaking essays and poems in this volume profoundly challenged how we think about identity. BORDERLANDS/LA FRONTERA remapped our understanding of what a "border" is, seeing it not as a simple divide between here and there, us and them, but as a psychic, social, and cultural terrain that we inhabit, and that inhabits all of us. This twentieth-anniversary edition features new commentaries from prominent activists, artists, and teachers on the legacy of Gloria Anzaldua's visionary work.

The Chicana Perspective
By Holly Fernandez
In a time where controversy continues around issues of offical language, immigration, and national identity in the United States, this book opens the eyes of the "dominant white culture" in America to struggles that our latino citizens need to overcome in their lives. Not only an excellent book for any latina to read who shares the same expereince as Anzaldua, mestiza born in the United States struggling to choose a clear identity, but also a highly recommended read for non latinos. In her introduction, Anzaldua extends an invitation to anglo americans to meet them halfway in understanding these controversial issues of our society. Although written in the style of a personal narrative that at times makes you laugh out loud, this book will help chicanas have a better understanding of their own heritage and whites to rethink their positions on immigration and official language.

Sarong Party Girl (SPG). She's the sexually proficient goddess who's caught in between Western liberal fancies and her Eastern roots. This book is an unabashed expose of the girl some white expatriates cite as the biggest incentive for working in the East!

Great book
By Kevin O'Brien
I am a newcomer to Singapore, and this book was recommended to me by a friend. I owe that person my gratitude, because this book has changed my life. I was a shy and introverted fellow who had trouble with women and girls, but all that will be changing soon thanks to my new location and the insights gained by the book. I am confident that my "lady problems" are a thing of the past, and I feel more radiant and purposeful than ever before. Look out world (especially you ladies), here I come!

Humorous Look at Asian Blind Worship of the West
By A Customer
I purchased this book in Singapore, a tiny city-state with a society that is more western compared to equally prosperous neighbors to the north. The book takes a humorous look at a group of ethnic Chinese Singaporean women who stake out joints catering to white expatriate men. The book illustrates one of the bad side effects that a once traditional nation going through dramatic westernization in a short period had to suffer.

NOW WE ARE SIX
By Lucia Butler
I have ordered this book for each of my grandchildren as they turn 6. I have one to go. I received a copy from my grandmother. My oldest daughter took a passage from this book and placed it on the wall in the kids' bathroom. So the parents do read it too. This is a book that should be read to the children until they are old enough for themselves. As this book was 1st released in the 20s and is still being published says everything.

Better than anything including electronic games.
By Allison62
I received this book and was read to from it by my mother when I was six. I LOVE those memories. I'm 53 now and bought this for my six year old granddaughter and when she visits, she brings it so I can read to her. It's a timeless classic and so much better than an electronic gizmo that requires to imagination or human interaction. Love it!

The Teenage Brain: A Neuroscientist's Survival Guide to Raising Adolescents and Young Adults, by Frances E. Jensen, Amy Ellis Nutt

An internationally respected neurologist offers a revolutionary look at the brains of adolescents, providing surprising insights - including why smart kids often do stupid things - and practical advice for adults and teens.

In this groundbreaking, accessible book, Dr. Frances E. Jensen - a mother, teacher, researcher, and internationally known expert in neurology - introduces us to the mystery and magic of the teen brain. One of the first books to focus exclusively on the neurological development of adolescents, The Teenage Brain presents new findings, dispels widespread myths, and provides practical suggestions for negotiating this difficult and dynamic life stage for both adults and adolescents.

Interweaving easy-to-follow scientific data with anecdotes drawn from her experiences as a parent, clinician, and public speaker, Dr. Jensen explores adolescent brain functioning and development, including learning and memory, and investigates the impact of influences such as drugs, multitasking, sleep, and stress. The Teenage Brain reveals how:

-Adolescents may not be as resilient to the effects of drugs as we previously thought. Occasional use of marijuana has been shown to cause lingering memory problems, and long-term use can affect later adulthood IQ.

-Multitasking causes divided attention and can reduce learning ability.

-Emotionally stressful situations in adolescence can have permanent effects on mental health and may lead to higher risk for certain neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression.

Rigorous yet accessible, warm yet direct, The Teenage Brain sheds new light on young adults and provides practical suggestions for how parents, schools, and even the legal system can better help them during this crucial period.

''Marvelous . . . Dr. Jensen uses her considerable expertise as a neuroscientist and a mother to explain the recent explosion of adolescent brain research and how this research can help us better understand and help young people.'' --Carol A. Ford, MD, president, Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine; professor of pediatrics, University of Pennsylvania; and chief, Division of Adolescent Medicine at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

''Frances Jensen has brilliantly translated academic science and clinical studies . . . A 'must read' for parents, teachers, school nurses, and many others who live with or interact with teens.'' --S. Jean Emans, MD, chief, Division of Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine, Boston Children's Hospital; professor of pediatrics, Harvard Medical School

From the Back Cover

For many years, scientists believed that the adolescent brain was essentially an adult one. Over the last decade, however, neurology and neuroscience have revealed that the teen years encompass vitally important stages of brain development.

Interweaving clear summary and analysis of research data with anecdotes drawn from her years as a clinician, researcher, and public speaker, renowned neurologist Frances E. Jensen, MD, explores adolescent brain functioning and development in the context of learning and multitasking, stress and memory, sleep, addiction, and decision making.

The Teenage Brain explains how these eye-opening findings not only dispel commonly held myths about teens but also yield practical suggestions for adults and teenagers negotiating the mysterious and magical world of adolescent biology.

“It’s charming to see good science translate directly into good parenting.”—New York Times Book Review

“This well-written, accessible work...offers support and a way for parents to understand and relate to their own soon-to-be-adult offspring.”—Publishers Weekly

Good but could be better
By Dienne
I was a little leery of this book from the opening pages. Dr. Jensen opens with a horror story - her teenage son came home with his hair dyed black. She just couldn't imagine how such a level-headed kid could do such a thing. And, worse, he wanted to get red streaks as well. So her solution was to spend a fortune taking him to her "color guy" to get it done right. I guess Dr. Jensen and I have different ideas on parenting. I made a vow early on never to sweat the small stuff, and I consider hair color well within that category - if that's the worst my kids do in their teenage years, I will count my blessings. Furthermore, if they're going to experiment with hair color, they can take responsibility and accept the consequences themselves. Green hair is not fatal.

But maybe the information on the teenage brain is better, and we can just agree to disagree about parenting. Dr. Jensen clearly knows her stuff as far as brain development, anatomy, physiology and chemistry go, but I found her information a bit weak, disorganized and failing to thoroughly connect the dots, and I found many of her illustrative stories distracting and a bit alarmist.

Dr. Jensen starts with an overview of brain structures relevant for cognitive and emotional functioning, including, among others, the brain stem, the amygdala, the hippocampus and the cerebral cortex, especially the frontal lobes. She shows how brain development is a process of both "pruning", in which excess neurons are selectively cut back based on environmental stimulation or lack thereof and "myelination" in which the neurons are coated with a fatty sheath with helps to send signals faster along neuronal pathways. The pruning allows for specialization of function within brain regions and allows neurons with to "fire" and "wire" together creating associations to learn new information and hone new skills. Myelination allows different brain regions to be more connected and integrated.

These developmental processes start from the back, more primitive parts of the brain and work forward toward the more advanced "executive" parts of the brain. The amygdala, for instance, is one of the most primitive parts of the brain which allows for recognition of and response to threats and stress. It is highly reactive to emotion, but until the frontal lobes are better developed and integrated, the child/teenager has little ability to process and manage that emotion and control impulses.

The processes of pruning and myelination are part of brain "plasticity", meaning that the brain has great potential to change. For a long time it has been thought that this period of great plasticity was limited to early childhood (up to about age five), which is why early childhood enrichment and learning have been considered so important. But science is now showing us that adolescence (beginning in the early teen years and continuing through young adulthood, approximately the early twenties) is another period of great plasticity. Which means that teens are capable of learning and changing nearly as much as young children. This means that adolescence is an exciting time of opportunity, growth and development. But it also means that the perils of the teen years are even more intense because negative experiences during these years are more likely to be encoded in the brain and lead to life-long emotional, relational, legal and general health problems.

Dr. Jensen spends a chapter discussing what this means for teens' ability to learn and the importance of sleep (along with a discussion about teens' diurnal cycles, indicating that teens' tend to be sleep deprived because they are biologically programmed to go to sleep and wake up later than adults, but are nonetheless required to function on adults' schedules and how this is potentially harmful for teen brain development). She then spends a chapter discussing risk-taking behavior in teens and how the reward centers in teens' brains are wired to respond much more excitedly to potential rewards (including and especially peer approval) than adults' brains - to the point that teens have difficulty evaluating risks if the pull of the reward is too strong.

Next Dr. Jensen spends a chapter each discussing potential harmful influences and obstacles frequently encountered in the teen years, including tobacco, alcohol, pot, stress, mental illness, digital overload and concussions, along with how those factors can affect teens' brains and why teens are so much more susceptible to their influence. I do have an issue with her chapter on stress because she seems to be saying that teens are under a lot more stress than adults. I think it's more that teens have fewer and less developed coping mechanisms than adults, so the stress they have seems greater ("drama"). But I'd say it's absurd to suggest that someone who has a home and food to eat is under more stress than the parents who are working to provide that home and food.

Finally Dr. Jensen wraps up with a look beyond adolescence into young adulthood and how continuing brain plasticity offers unique opportunities, yet continuing perils, for young people. She provides some advice on how to help the burgeoning adult in your life make a successful transition, which is pretty much just a developmental continuation of her advice for structuring your teens' life for maximal likelihood of success. Basically it boils down to don't be afraid to be involved in your child's life. Although the quality and intensity differ as children age, children continue to need supervision and guidance well into adulthood.

There is certainly a lot of good information in this book, but it's just not presented as effectively as it could be. Dr. Jensen is trying hard to present precise scientific information in generally understandable layman's terms, but she doesn't get either quite right. She is trying hard to be both scientific and folksy, but some of her jargon is not adequately explained (especially when a previously discussed brain structure or function comes up again in later chapters) and sometimes her folksy tone makes it difficult to accept her scientific viewpoint.

In addition, a lot of her presentation of studies relies on correlational studies without addressing the issue of causation. For instance, she'll talk about brain abnormalities found in teens who smoke, drink or use illegal drugs with the implication that the drugs caused the abnormality. But there also needs to be a discussion of the possibility that brain abnormalities may be likely to lead teens to such behavior - perhaps they are more prone to risk-taking or more responsive to rewards, or perhaps they are "self-medicating" to deal with the effects of their abnormalities.

Finally, Dr. Jensen seems to believe that teens need to be beaten over the head with alarmist messages about the dangers of the world. I agree that repetition is helpful for learning, but generally speaking, lack of information is not why kids get into the problems they do. Every kid by now knows that smoking causes lung cancer and that driving under the influence greatly increases the chance of serious collision. The problem, however, is that teens think that they are invincible. It can help to show them situations involving kids their own age, but such situations can also be traumatizing and paradoxically increase the likelihood of the behavior. Seeing a mangled car that was involved in a DUI accident, for instance, can lead to a variety of emotional responses including excitation. There are no easy answers, of course, but keeping the lines of communication open is vital. Beating kids over the head too much can lead them to tune out and shut down.

There have been a spate of books lately on brain development and what it means for raising children and adolescents. In my view, this is one of the weaker of those books. For a better view of the brain science side of the equation I recommend Laurence Steinberg's AGE OF OPPORTUNITY (although I part company with him too on a lot of his applications of what we've learned about teenage brain development). And although it's aimed more at parents of younger kids rather than teenagers, for the child-rearing angle I recommend Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson's NO DRAMA DISCIPLINE. The important take-away of that book is how children's and teen's brains are wired to respond to perceived stress and threats, including that posed by how we as parents interact with our kids when we get angry and punitive. And for a very thorough look at how stress affects all human systems, including the brain, I recommend Robert Zapolsky's WHY ZEBRAS DON'T GET ULCERS. The more we learn about brain development and functioning over the life course, the more we seem to realize that stress is one of the prime determinants in whether people thrive or fail. As parents, including parents of teens, the best gifts we can give our children are a safe and secure environment and the tools to manage and rebound from stress and trauma when they do occur.

A Neuronal Guide to Understanding your Teen
By Alicia B. Taylor
Excellent book that offers impactful information on both the psychology and physiology of the teen brain. It's easy enough to read for those without a medical background and offers plenty of science to engage those with a neuroscience background. Quick read. A soon as I'm finished reading, I'm passing it on to my almost 15 year old daughter in hopes that she'll recognize herself in the examples and maybe think twice as she encounters tricky teen situations over the next several years.

This is an illuminating and easy to follow read for both the scholar and layperson.
By Kristi Myers
This is an illuminating and easy to follow read for both the scholar and layperson. I used it in my Lifespan Development graduate psychology course because it makes brain development and anatomy easy to understand. As a mom to a 14 year-old, this book makes a lot of practical sense, too. Well written and pleasant to read, I really can't put it down.

From the Back Cover

In recent decades, modern “improvements” to our lifestyle and food supply have come with a cost: our health. From pesticides in our soil to the refrigeration and pasteurization of our food to an overreliance on antibiotics and a preoccupation with sanitizing everything in sight, our desire to be clean is actually putting us at risk for a host of chronic illnesses.

That’s because as we’ve shifted our focus to living a germ-free life, our bodies—specifically, our digestive systems—have taken a hit. Starved of actual nutrition, fed toxic levels of processed foods, and overtaxed by chemicals, stress, and excessive antimicrobial use, we’ve developed microscopic tears in our intestinal walls, leading to the widespread inflammation and weakened immunity that characterize a condition known as “leaky gut syndrome.”

In Eat Dirt, functional medicine practitioner Dr. Josh Axe explains the hidden causes and widespread effects of leaky gut syndrome, a condition that is thought to be ground zero for many of the country’s most confounding health crises—including allergies, asthma, food sensitivities, diabetes, digestive diseases, arthritis, thyroid conditions, and even frustratingly difficult-to-treat conditions such as chronic fatigue and autism.

Dr. Axe explains that 70 percent of our immune system is located in the gut—when it’s under attack, our health suffers. In leaky gut syndrome, a number of factors—including insufficient exposure to“dirt”—leads to the breakdown of the intestinal wall, allowing food, bacteria, and toxins to seep into the bloodstream. In Eat Dirt, Dr. Axe reveals that the solution, while counterintuitive, is almost effortless: we just need to welcome a little more “dirt” back into our lives.

From ditching hand sanitizers, using essential oils for personal products, reducing antibiotic use, and consuming local honey to spending more time outside, eating seasonally, managing stress, and incorporating probiotic-rich foods into our diets, Dr. Axe provides specific guidance to help everyone get a little “dirty.”

I got my life back
By Gina A.
I have been obsessed with Dr.Axe since discovering his YouTube channel. I have been anxiously awaiting Eat Dirt and it does not disappoint. This time last year I was 35 pounds lighter, muscles were well defined and I felt great. All of that started to change in May of 2015. I compete in ocr & exercise 5-6 days per week as well as eat very clean. That did not change, however weight started to come on. After 15 pounds, I went to my primary and she reluctantly tested my thyroid. When it came ask normal, I took that to mean it was within my control. I dug in deeper with my nutrition. I went vegan. I worked out more. I started experiencing depression and anxiety, extreme fatigue, horrible pms. I was up 27 pounds and went back to my primary. She reluctantly ran a full thyroid panel, although she felt it was unnecessary as we shouldn't worry until I was up 100 pounds...what?? I asked her if it's not my thyroid, what could it be. Her response, "I don't know." She referred me to an endocrinologist. 3 days later my labs come back normal and they inform me that the endocrinogist will not schedule with me because my thyroid is fine.
That's where conventional medicine left me.
I started researching and stumbled upon Dr. Axe. I immediately started implementing his recommendations into my daily routine. The depression and brain fog started lifting. The weight gain stopped. The energy started coming back. I got my life back!
Now I'm ready to kick this weight to the curb by implementing what I have learned in Eat Dirt.
Some of my favorite quotes in the book:
"We CAN heal. We just need to summon the collective will to change some of our long-standing but extremely damaging habits – especially our deadly addiction to being clean. "

"On a cell for cell basis, we are 90% microbial. We don't just live on the earth – the earth lives in us."

"While this is cutting edge science, the solutions could not be any simpler. All we need to do to load up on our old friends and get more of these microexposures is easy, fun stuff we probably already love to do: get back to eating seasonally and locally. Spend more time outdoors. Hug our dogs after they roll around in the leaves. Let our kids to make mud pies get their hands dirty on the playground."

"Go "forest bathing." Go on a short walk in the woods, and take many deep breaths, consciously bringing the scent of the trees into your lungs. This form of aromatherapy is a practice called "shinrin-yoku," or "forest bathing," in Japanese. Researchers there found breathing in the antimicrobial organic compounds called phytoncides - the woods' essential oils - decreased cortisol levels and blood pressure, enhanced immune system function, and stabilized nervous system activity.

I found a local doctor of functional medicine and I was diagnosed with estogen dominance, low progesterone, low DHEA, adrenal fatigue and leaky gut. If you are suffering from any of these issues, you need this book.

I will return to this review in a few weeks to report how I feel with the Eat Dirt plan.

I Failed the "Leaky Gut Questionnaire"
By Bassocantor
At first, I thought this book was only mildly interesting. Then, I decided to take the "Leaky Gut" test. The author uses these simple questions to check the likelihood that the "good" microbes in your gut have been harmed. To my astonishment, I had many of the leaky gut symptoms noted in the test (and which my current physician has not resolved.)

Okay, at this point, I got a LOT more interested in what Dr. Axe had to say.

Dr. Axe's main point is that we need to get back to the bacterial DIVERSITY that we used to have: "Bacterial diversity keeps the whole system in balance." The idea is, this balance requires lots of different bacteria. This used to happen naturally in our environment and diet, but when we started to use tons of chemicals, and changed our food composition, we began to reduce the types of bacteria in our gut.

EAT DIRT contains a pretty detailed technical discussion about how our digestive system works, and the important layers in our gut. The doctor explains that these layers protect our body from dangerous pathogens. The health of this barrier is affected by certain chemicals. Research shows that these chemicals are released by the over-consumption of gluten. When the protective wall thins, this leads to the "leaky gut" syndrome, with all the nasty symptoms.

The author cites quite a bit of scientific studies, but he admits that the field is changing, and that tons of research is ongoing. In fact, he notes that there have been over a thousand new research studies in the last year alone. There are lots of interesting studies cited that seem to support the author's ideas. Perhaps the most intriguing, for me, was one study that linked bacterial diversity to lower body weight and lower fat.

The author recounts the experiences from different patients in his medical practice. He is careful to note that one patient's experience--no matter how impressive, should not be generalized to everyone. He cautions the reader to not jump to broad conclusions based on just a few anecdotal cases. I thought this was wise counsel.

EAT DIRT has links to "replacement foods" so that you can switch-out your current menu items for more healthy choices. Besides these links, the doctor also discusses alternatives for common foods. For example, instead of drinking the usual milk, he discusses the advantages of coconut and almond milk, as well as more unusual alternatives.

I never understood the fuss about wheat and gluten. After all, I thought, how can something so natural really be harmful? Well, the author explains that it's not the SAME wheat, and it's prevalence is not the same as it used to be--its use is far more widespread now. Okay--I appreciate this information. I admit I did not know that.

I found EAT DIRT to be a serious work that will require serious study. There is a LOT to absorb in this book. The author makes many good points, and he does a good job of supporting his theories. The appendices contain lots of notes and further research information.

I have decided to follow the author's advice, and make some changes in my diet and lifestyle. I will especially to try to get more diverse bacteria by making some simple dietary changes. Fortunately, many of Dr. Axe's food recommendations are tasty. I like Kefir, and I'm buying more.

Nothing short of transformational
By M Knutson
This book was referred to me by a family member who is also a nurse, and has explored a good deal of naturopathic medicine in her history - in the last 5-7 years I have been diagnosed with infertility of unknown origin, and had increasing issues over the years with acne, adrenal exhaustion including a benign tumor on the adrenal gland, GI issues, weight gain and puffiness / inflammation, borderline thyroid numbers, borderline blood sugar numbers, etc. I have been experimenting with different food protocols for years to help heal (including long stints on a full elimination diet), as well as in and out of traditional doctors offices without much remedy. I'm 41 years old this year - and exhausted most of the time. I read this book in two days, and have been implementing the suggestions for 4 weeks. It has so far been nothing short of transformational - alot of my energy has returned and is continuing to get better, my skin is starting to clear up and feel healthier, my GI symptoms and "brain fog" are GONE, and I lost 8 lbs in the first 5 days of eating the right things described in the book - I still can't believe how much inflammation and puffiness went down, and thus how much water I lost, in that first week. I simply had no idea that you needed to heal the gut first to have it absorb all of the good things you put in there - this is one of the key steps I've missed in previous efforts. Pros on this book - easy to read and pulls content together in an understandable, relate-able way, can be done in 2-3 days, has quizzes and daily food plans to help guide you and get to the specifics of you, and Dr. Axe has a website that offers more tools, info and recipes. A highly recommended read for those that are on a seeking journey for health answers and are up for just a little food and lifestyle experimentation. Although I wish I would have had this book 5 years ago, I'm so glad I found it now...
