The Key to Practice
By P. Farmer
The Class Lessons of 1888 open the lens for how Turth and the teachings developed after the break with Christian Science. The break was a break in let's say "control", but not a break in truth. Emma Curtis Hopkins brought to the table the lessons that she was taught and in the lessons she does refer to her teacher, Mary Baker Eddy.

These lessons are written in a clear understandable fashion and give a step by step approach. No one can teach you how to open the door to consciousness, but having clear guidance to the threshold is a tremendous help. If at first you don't succeed, this text takes you to what the "blocks" might be. These lessons are as useful today as they were in the 1800's.

All of the founders of the various New Thought movements took lessons from Emma Curtis Hopkins and "these" are the lessons they took that changed their lives. People like the Filmores, Emily Cady, Melissa Cramer, and Ernest Holmes, who took private lessons when Ms. Hopkins had retired from teaching.

What worked yesterday, still works today. Truth is truth regardless of the date!

From Booklist
More than 240 entries representing folk medical practices used in North America, Britain, Ireland, and Scotland were gleaned from extensive research. Articles are followed by no less than a dozen scholarly references related to the study of superstition and folklore. Ranging from a concise paragraph to several pages in length, entries include the treating of ailments and conditions such as Insect bites and stings (applying spit, urine, soda, vinegar, or well-chewed tobacco); Palsy (ingesting cowslip, applying leeches, or holding a dying chicken); and wrinkles (drinking elderflower water, goat's milk, or an infusion of butterwort) and the supporting of contraception (using birch bark diaphragms, impotence-inducing Rhus trilobata, or eating heart ventricles). Other entries discuss the various uses of remedies such as dandelion and Holly. See also references follow each article, and an index completes the volume.

In concept, this volume is an ambitious effort, an attempt to record for future consideration and study a host of old-world and new-world folk traditions. Such traditions are often passed down by word of mouth from generation to generation, but the current resurgence in using alternative treatment and natural remedies to treat ailments makes examination of this volume worthwhile. This is not a health reference book, however; it would be as much at home in folk culture collections as in a library's medical section. Public libraries with patron interest or academic libraries with collections in traditional medicine would profit from the author's historical approach. RBB

Review
"[A]n authoritative and exhaustively researched volume . . . well organized and attractively designed . . . for libraries with collections in the history of medicine, folklore, and anthropology." - American Reference Books Annual

"Because oral traditions are often lost when practitioners die, this work makes a valuable contribution to folk medicine and to medical literature in general. It is also interesting to read . . . Highly recommended. All collections." - Choice

"[W]ould be as much at home in folk culture collections as in a library's medical section. Public libraries with patron interest or academic libraries with collections in traditional medicine would profit from the author's historical approach." - Booklist

"[T]his is a valiant effort at bringing together a considerable body of information. Even though the individual entries are short, Hatfield's catholic approach to selecting topics for articles and the thoroughness with which the entries are documented will make this a helpful source for those researching British and British-derived American folk medicine." - Journal of American Folklore

Outstanding overview of the complexities of commercialization
By L. Burnett
I am using this text in a commercializing biomaterials course and highly recommend it to graduate students and post-docs who want to enter the world of start-up biotechnology. I think it would also be very helpful to junior faculty who are thinking about commercializing their research. It is brilliantly constructed to walk you through the basics of taking your research from the bench to bedside and the challenges you are going to face along the way. I also found the author's use of vignettes and specific examples very helpful to illustrate complex points. This book won't write your business plan for you but should help you do your market analysis and give you the questions to ask when you initiate disclosures to your university's Technology Transfer office. Highly recommended.

Outstanding Text for Understanding Commercialization Strategies
By Thomas Ulbrich
We have used this text at the University at Buffalo School of Management Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership in a program called High Tech CEL for the past two years. The program was developed to help early stage life sciences companies find a pathway to commercialization. This text is a valuable tool that takes sometimes complicated pathways and represents them in easy to understand language and diagrams that almost anyone can follow. Shreefal Mehta does a great job of distilling tons of material down into a tight compact text that can be used as both a textbook and a reference guide. Everyone involved in the life sciences industries should have one copy on their desk and couple more on their office shelves to hand out. Highly recommended!

The Long View: Career Strategies to Start Strong, Reach High, and Go Far, by Brian Fetherstonhaugh

The Chairman & CEO of OgilvyOne Worldwide and career advisor extraordinaire, Brian Fetherstonhaugh, outlines the three stages of a long, successful work life and offers guidance to plan ahead and get the most out of each phase.

The world of careers is vastly different than it was just five years ago―more choices, more competition, and relentless change in how we define work-life. It can be difficult to understand our options and plan for a prosperous future.

Where can you go for answers? Colleges may teach us academic and technical skills, and there are places to look for tips on how to write a resume or prep for a job interview. But is it enough?

Brian Fetherstonhaugh, CEO of OgilvyOne Worldwide, understands this dilemma and how to navigate it. He believes we need more than tactics―we need robust, road-tested strategies that combine old-school wisdom with new-school context so that we can flourish in the new professional reality. In The Long View, Fetherstonhaugh shows us the three distinct but interconnected stages of a career, and how we build ‘fuel’ at every step along the way to create long-term success. The Long View teaches us new ways of finding jobs, new methods to build careers that last, and a new definition of “work” that embraces life-satisfaction and happiness.

The Long View offers highly practical exercises that challenge you to rethink how to assess your skills, invest your time and expand your personal network, and provides a framework for facing tough job decisions. With insights drawn from interviews with a variety of professionals―who share both success stories and cautionary tales―The Long View will help you establish your own path for overcoming obstacles and making the best choices for a long, accomplished, and rewarding career.

Mr. Fetherstonhaugh provides great examples of how and why we should taking different approaches to career strategies. This is especially quite timely for millennials. I like how he describes the need to hone, study, and strengthen your skills during the first 15 years. This awfully important because (today) many people are rushing to get promoted or look for the next opportunity that will increase their pay, but in the meantime, their skill set and expertise has not been challenged, increased, and improved upon.

More than anything, the book's author helps all of us understand that we need to be patient. As the old adage goes: This is a marathon and not 100-meter yard dash. I would highly recommend this for young, middle age, and old alike.

For those who have spent most of there career as independents (consultants/contractors) some but little discussed is applicable (usable). Great read for those just starting out and those looking to start second career and have worked as employee for one maybe two employers.

Concise and handy guide to Google Maps API
By jaclynn
Why can't all tech books be written like this? It gets right to the point, and the reader starts scripting maps in the second paragraph of chapter 1. The style is, code first, code explained second, which is what I personally prefer. Examples are simple and clear, and progression is appropriate. Best for those who already know html, css and js/json. My recommendation is to type the code in by hand rather than use the downloads. The examples are mostly short and for me, this helps me retain the concepts. All code is useful, no fluff, especially the geocode script. Great as a series of tutorials, but also as a type of field manual. Well done.

By Sage Liskey
This is a really handy guide to creating custom Google Maps with programming, allowing you to use the software in ways that are impossible through the typical user interface at maps.google.com. Prior programming experience is required, but the exercises build in complexity throughout the book to give you a thorough understanding of controlling factors on a map such as color, highlighting an area, graphical overlays, inputting locations, and much more.

Review
Review from previous edition: "An outstanding and useful text, de rigeur for young registrars."

--British Journal of General Practice September 2002

"At less than one quarter of the price of a QOF point (L29.95), this book is excellent value for money and...it should be on the shelves of every Director of Public Health, or public health professional working within primary care organisations."

--Public Health Feb 07

"The best book by a country mile. I'd definitely recommend it!"

--medicworld.co.uk September 2006

"This is a book that demands to be used. It is well built for the job... The book is hugely and surprisingly comprehensive, covering vast tracts of areas of knowledge that GPs need to possess. Clinical and non clinical areas are amply covered in really good detail. The style is factual yet
helpful and accessible and a simple scan of the relevant section is likely to help a GP manage a situation... For GP trainers like myself, this is an excellent source of tutorial material. The clinical sections are just as good... it is a frontline recipe book for all GPs-busy or not so busy.
Without doubt, in my mind this is the best available book for British general practice and it ideal for GP registrars, newly starting GPs, mid career GPs and GPs wanting to freshen up their knowledge... there is little excuse not to buy it."

--Dr Harry Brown

"What a treat - 1,100 pages of condensed knowledge and wisdom on everything from the new contract to what to do for obstetric shock... this is an essential - and I mean essential - piece of kit."

--The Sessional GP December 2005 - January 2006

"A comprehensive guide to nearly everything. It is the yellow book equivalent for general practice. If you only buy one book, make sure it is this one."

--British Medical Journal October 2005

"Small yet perfectly formed! This book is small enough to fit into any bag, or a capacious pocket, yet covers almost anything (clinical, practical, administrative) that any doctor or undergraduate working in general practice needs to know...I am extremely pleased to have been able to use and
review this book. I have no hesitation in recommending it to its target audience."

--BMA Medical Book Award Panel 2006

"As a comfort blanket for the less experienced it remains unrivalled, but truly, it is a must-have book for all"

--British Journal of General Practice August 2010

"This is an absolute gem of a book. I would not be without it for my general practice training...It is portable, comprehensive and relevant and the logical format covers practice management as well as medical conditions."

--BMA Medical Book Competition 2010

THIS is how a series should end.
By Krista
This - THIS - is everything a series ender should be. There was danger and mystery and angst and some of the best romantic moments ever. Reclaim Me was the best way to close the book on Alessandra and Hudson's story.

After a crazy cliffhanger at the end of Release Me, I went into Reclaim Me feeling a bit trepidatious. Allie's horrible ex had cornered her, both literally and figuratively. She had very real reason to fear for both hers and Hudson's lives.

Now, see, I'm always a big fan of communication. I hate it when characters make decisions for their loved ones out of some misplaced sense of protection. They martyr themselves and become miserable, when, if they had just explained how they felt or what was going on and approached the problem together, it all could've turned out better for everyone. Allie had the perfect opportunity to act in that way here, and for awhile I thought I'd spend the entire book being frustrated at her actions and lack of trust in Hudson's ability to help her handle the situation.

However, Allie was an amazingly awesome heroine. She remembers how badly she functioned without Hudson in her life, and decides to not repeat past mistakes. And, thus, she and Hudson set out together to try and thwart Julian's plans and still remain together. Which is not an easy feat when it seems that Julian has them bested at every turn.

Julian was a truly loathsome man. There was not one single redeeming quality about him. Never once did he show remorse for his actions or any true affection for Allie. It made it easy to hate him. He was a great villain.

The shining star in Reclaim Me was Hudson, though. This dreamy man knows how to woo a woman. And, when that woman is THE woman, it's even better. Reclaim Me is told in dual POV, so we get to hear both Allie's and his thoughts on the events as they are unfolding. We witness Hudson's intense frustration at his inability to fix things right away. We witness his continually growing feelings for Allie, which I promise you will make you swoon HARD. And, we witness Hudson in full alpha mode as he wrangles the people around him and works his angles to help the woman he loves.

I really loved the fleshing out of the side relationship between Hudson's brother Nick and Allie's BFF Harper. Nick has come a very long way since book 1, and he's now a reliable source of advice and comfort for his big brother. And, Harper has always been Allie's voice of reason. Together, Nick and Harper are just what Allie and Hudson needed in this really difficult time.

Despite how nail biting Reclaim Me was, I was so sad to see Allie's and Hudson's story come to a close. It was a crazy, sexy, exciting ride, though, and one that I really enjoyed.

By scmartin04
I love to read trilogies and The Chasing Fire Trilogy immediately skyrocketed to the top of my 2015 favorite books list. You see Ann Marie and Amy created this amazing series that captivated me from the very start. Their muse or inspiration for their male protagonist Hudson, was David Gandy. Enough said. Wow! I’m a Gandy girl and I will tell you, he is the perfect Hudson. Trust me, this is a series I am sure you will love.

Reclaim Me is the final book in this trilogy. This book picks up where the last book leaves you, hanging and full of angst. Alessandra and Hudson are in France. Harper, Allie’s best friend has flown to meet her there. And, the arrogant French ass Julian is back with his own agenda for Allie and Hudson.

Once back in Chicago, Allie and Hudson have plenty to deal with. Julian is making sure Allie complies with his plan. Many revelations are made along the way. Lets just say, life becomes more complicated for Allie and Hudson. (no spoilers)

Allie wants to protect Hudson and Nick while Hudson wants to protect Allie.

Hudson continues to be the commanding alpha male I love so much while still showing a lighter and more humorous side. Look out for some fun and sexy text messages along the way too. Hudson also knows how to romance his lady. Yes, Hudson even dabbles in poetry. He will stop at nothing to show his love for Allie.

One of the reasons why I enjoyed this book so much is because all of the secondary characters stand out. We learn more about them and ultimately love them more. They truly play important roles in Hudson and Allie’s lives. They help to make this story complete.

Nick, Hudson’s brother is on the right track. And, if you made the same prediction I made in Release Me, you’ll be thrilled to learn more about his personal/love life in this book. His relationship with Hudson is stronger as well. I loved the sibling bonding, especially a certain bow tie scene. I’d love to read more about Nick in another book. (Please)

Collin, Allie’s assistant proves to be a great friend too. He’s always had Allie’s back and turns out to be an invaluable and trustworthy employee as well.

Harper, the bff. She’s sassy and full of life. I’ve always loved her and I was excited to see how her personal life unfolded as well. Let’s just say, Harper and Allie have similar taste in men.

Prepare yourself for a thrill ride through Chicago. You’ll find adventure, love, angst, humor, hope, romance, revelations from the past, friendship, an adorable puppy, and lots and lots of steamy sex in this final book.

Will Allie and Hudson find their happily ever after?

Writing this review was bittersweet and difficult. I didn’t want Hudson and Allie’s story to end and at the same time, I wanted to share the story with you. But, I can’t spoil it. You will have to get the book/series and read for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

I loved all of the books in this series. However, Reclaim Me is my favorite. The intensity of their love, their passion and unwavering pursuit for a happy ending makes this such a spectacular read.

So if you haven’t started this series, one click it today. Happy reading!
I gave this book 5 steamy stars!

Chasing Fire Series has it ALL!
By Kiersten
I really really really want to tell you how this series ends. I've been holding it in for so long, I'm about to burst with excitement to dish with someone! But, let me just say, I couldn't be any happier with this ending....

Hudson Chase had always feared that his past would be his downfall. He's spent years working tirelessly to outrun his youth and create a whole new world in which he would be the victor. He would be powerful. Hudson Chase would be in control of his future. And, his idea of the future has always included Allie Sinclair.

Now that Hudson has had a glimpse of what his future with Allie could be; he refuses to settle for anything less. But, protecting those you love can be a difficult task when the skeletons start to spill out of your closet. Hudson is a fixer. He is certainly not accustomed to allowing others to fight his battles. Allie wants nothing more than to save Hudson; even if it's from himself. This book finds Hudson and Allie torn apart, but they're also together. They are united to defeat a common enemy. And, they're both willing to sacrifice their own future and their own happiness for the other.
The Chasing Fire series has it ALL: romance, angst, steam, adventure, more steam, plot twists, a kick-ass hero, an smarmy villain, a deserving heroine and inspiring LOVE!

Hudson and Allie join my short list of perfectly-imperfect romance couples. This list includes: Christian and Ana, Gideon and Eva, Colton and Rylee, Edward and Bella, and you get the idea.....This is a series that I know I will read again. I've highlighted whole pages and I get all butterfly-filled just skimming over my favorite parts. The Chasing Fire series has become one of my go-to recommendations for an steamy romance and a perfect follow-up to Fifty Shades of Grey!

Be sure to check out our interview with Ann Marie Walker and Amy K Rogers in the latest installment of our That's What She Said series. And, please come find me as soon as you've finished the series - I'll be here on the blog, on Facebook or Twitter....we need to talk! Chapters 15-20.....SWOON - they're some of the most beautiful, heartfelt, scenes I've ever read!

Enjoy the Chasing Fire series and all the feels of investing yourself in a wonderful romance and incredible characters. I have no doubt you'll join the long list of readers who proudly proclaim to be a #HudsonChaser!

Conversations on Consciousness: What the Best Minds Think about the Brain, Free Will, and What It Means to Be Human, by Susan Blackmore

In Conversations on Consciousness, Susan Blackmore interviews some of the great minds of our time, a who's who of eminent thinkers, all of whom have devoted much of their lives to understanding the concept of consciousness. The interviewees, ranging from major philosophers to renowned scientists, talk candidly with Blackmore about some of the key philosophical issues confronting us in a series of conversations that are revealing, insightful, and stimulating. They ruminate on the nature of consciousness (is it something apart from the brain?) and discuss if it is even possible to understand the human mind. Some of these thinkers say no, but most believe that we will pierce the mystery surrounding consciousness, and that neuroscience will provide the key. Blackmore goes beyond the issue of consciousness to ask other intriguing questions: Is there free will? (A question which yields many conflicted replies, with most saying yes and no.) If not, how does this effect the way you live your life; and more broadly, how has your work changed the way you live?
Paired with an introduction and extensive glossary that provide helpful background information, these provocative conversations illuminate how some of the greatest minds tackle some of the most difficult questions about human nature.

From Publishers Weekly
Blackmore (The Meme Machine) began conducting interviews with leading figures in the study of consciousness for a proposed (but never realized) radio series. In book form, especially organized alphabetically, 20 transcripts with scientists and philosophers from the late Francis Crick to Daniel Dennett and Roger Penrose don't add up to a coherent presentation. The q&a format leaves Blackmore eternally circling around a handful of key issues. She's particularly fond of the philosopher's theoretical zombie, a creature that displays all the outward behavior of human consciousness but has none. She asks just about everybody if they believe it could exist, leading the exasperated Francisco Varela to blurt, "It's just a problem you create by inventing problematic situations. So what?" Other questions, like how studying consciousness affects one's conception of free will, would benefit from stronger thematic unity, a tighter narrative format like that of John Horgan's Rational Mysticism (which profiles Blackmore in her capacity as a research psychologist). These conversations are fascinating raw material, but make for a frustrating guide to a highly complex subject. 22 illus.

From Scientific American
The question What is consciousness? provokes all kinds of responses, ranging from jokes about psychedelic drugs to brow-furrowing discourses on life's meaning. Nearly everyone has an opinion, despite the lack of meaningful data explaining the phenomenon. Susan Blackmore posed this question to 21 leading scientists and philosophers who study consciousness for a living, compiling their responses into lively, though slightly repetitive, Q&A interviews. In each case, Blackmore asks, What's the problem with consciousness? Why does it differ from other targets of scientific inquiry? Several thinkers insist that it does not and that researchers will fare better when they treat consciousness like anything else in nature. Others assert that consciousness is fundamentally different, constituting something extra beyond the ordinary physical world. Says David Chalmers, an Australian mathematician- turned-philosopher: The heart of the science of consciousness is trying to understand the first-person perspective-- to explain subjective experiences objectively. In grappling with what neuroscientists call the hard problem--the struggle to explain how neural processes create subjective experiences--the experts are long on theories but short on answers. Nearly all agree that classical dualism doesn't work--that the mind and brain cannot be made of distinct substances. Many refer instead to the neural correlates of consciousness, the neural activity present during a person's conscious experience. Blackmore queries the thinkers on such issues as life after death, the self and free will. Most say they do not believe in extracorporeal survival, in contrast with 55 percent of U.S. residents. Most also agree that scientific evidence does not support the notion of free will, despite the gripping feeling that it exists. And because the search for the source of a conscious I in the brain has turned up empty, the existence of a distinct self seems remote, although subjective awareness suggests each person needs a self to experience consciousness. Blackmore also asks the researchers why they chose to study consciousness and how doing so has affected their lives. Several refer to a fascination with altered states of consciousness prompted by drugs, meditation, dreams or anesthesia. Many abandoned fruitful research careers in other areas to pursue the Holy C. Perhaps the most extreme case is that of Francis Crick, a physicist who won the Nobel Prize by decoding DNA's structure and then at age 60 turned his attention to consciousness work for a quarter of a century. Crick's interview by Blackmore was his last; he died shortly thereafter, in July 2004.

Richard Lipkin

Review

"Consciousness. Where does it come from? Is it somehow separate from the human brain? Can the brain itself comprehend it? Blackmore, a lecturer in psychology at the University of the West of England, poses these and other intriguing questions to some of the top thinkers in philosophy and brain studies. In each interview, the author gets to the heart of the struggle to explain subjective experience in objective, scientific terms. Francis Crick, Daniel Dennett, John Searle, David Chalmers, and others describe the fundamental ideas behind the study of consciousness, including free will, the separation of mind and body, artificial intelligence, and conscious versus unconscious experience."--Science News

"Succeeds in providing a very brief survey of the multitude of positions occupied by thinkers in this area.... The often quirky personalities and mannerisms of the interviewees shine through the text.... Blackmore herself comes across as spunky and clever, and the probing follow-up questions she occasionally asks prevent the interviews from seeming too repetitive and boring."--Nature

"Susan Blackmore posed the question "What is consciousness?" to 21 leading scientists and philosophers who study consciousness for a living. It provokes all kinds of responses, ranging from jokes about psychedelic drugs to brow-furrowing discourses on life's meaning."-- Richard Lipkin, Scientific American

"Are some scientists zombies? That is among the thoughts raised by this diverting collection of interviews with neurobiologists, philosophers and others engaged in the study of the mind...a very efficient overview of contemporary strands of thinking about its subject."--Steven Poole, Guardian Unlimited

"Blackmore interrogates 20 mind-body experts--philosophers, neuroscientists, psychologists, and various hybrids. She doesn't stand on ceremony, is persistent, probing, honest about her puzzlements, and happy to defend her own views if the occasion arises, which once or twice creates a bit of friction."-- Tom Clark, Naturalism.org

"One remarkable aspect of the consciousness research field is the lack of agreement on what the key subject matter should be. What is the phenomenon for which we need an explanation? Susan Blackmore begins with these questions in Conversations on Consciousness, a collection of interviews with 21 prominent scientists and philosophers. Their answers introduce the reader to some of the concepts and puzzles at the centre of this fieldConversations on Consciousness provides a casual and accessible introduction to the topic. Few topics are specifically detailed, but the empirical and philosophical work summarized in the book is fascinating and easy to read."--Ephraim Glick, EMBO Reports (a publication of the European Molecular Biology Organization)

Very impressive book
By Vadim Vasilyev
That was a brilliant idea of Sue Blackmore, and the results are quite impressive. This book does what it was designed to do - it involves anyone (I believe) who reads it in the "hard problem of consciousness", that is in reflection on explanations of the fact of subjective experience arising from neural structures (there are a few other themes debated here like the problem of free will, but they are marginal - with an exeption of zombie-problem, which, however, is closely connected with "hard problem"). We see different approaches to the "hard problem" and a clash of philosophers, like Dennett, with scientists, like Crick or Koch. It became clear, however, that scientists are in need of philosophers these days. By the way, most elaborate responses in these conversations came from philosophers - Chalmers, Dennett, Velmans etc. So far - OK. Why only 4 stars then? Because the book is imbalanced, and Sue knows that. First of all, among her 20 "best minds" there are no Chomskian philosophers - Chomsky would probably refuse to respond - Fodor, McGinn, Pinker. Then where are Identity theorists - Armstrong or Smart? Why Edelman is not included in the list? Where is Kim? And so on. Of course, it is not easy to achieve balance in such projects. But still it is possible - I myself did something like that, collecting more than 100 opinions of Kant scholars in 2004 - so called "International Kant Interview". So Sue Blackmore did not do her best - but she did much. Her book helps to feel the progress in consciousness studies.

Not suitable as an introduction to consciousness researchers or their hypotheses
By David M. Ng
This book is a collection of "conversations" with scientists working on the problem of consciousness, and I was hoping that it would provide a readable and interesting introduction to these scientists and their various hypotheses. However, I found this book unsuitable for this purpose. The author does not try to organize the material--the "conversations" are presented in alphabetical order of the interviewees' last names because the author could not conceive of a meaningful order. There is virtually no editing of the material--the author wanted to "let the people speak for themselves" and "make the editing very light". There is only a minimal introduction to the book, and only biographical introductions to the scientists. While there may be some merit in the approach of "light editing," overall I had to wonder what value was added by the author. Additionally, in the book introduction the author generally refers to her interviewees by their first name. Perhaps she is trying to show that she is on a first-name basis with all these scientists, but since scientists are more typically known by their last names, this was distracting at best and made it even more difficult to follow the minimal introduction (who is "Dave"? ... presumably Chalmers). Overall, this book seems intended for somebody who is already familiar with the study of consciousness, not for a reader relatively new to the subject. I had previously read the author's book "Consciousness: A Very Short Introduction," and I didn't feel that prepared me for "Conversations on Consciousness." So what value does this book provide? If you are already familiar with the subject of consciousness, you may find the interviews with your favorite researchers to be of interest.

Controversies in consciousness studies
By R. Sohi
What is the problem of consciousness?

Are zombies (creatures that look and act like humans but who have no consciousness) theoretically possible?

Does consciousness survive death?

Is there such a thing as free will?

These are the types of questions Susan Blackmore poses to twenty-one experts, who come from neuroscience, philosophy and psychology, and who are all involved in the interdisciplinary field of consciousness studies. Each interview also includes specific questions about the subject's work and theories. The cumulative effect of reading them is that you walk away with a good sense of the frequently conflicting perspectives within the field and an idea of which ones you might want to explore further. As other reviewers have pointed out, the sequence of the interviews is alphabetical - an arbitrary choice but not one your reading of the book has to be restricted by. My preference was to dip into different sections till I'd read the whole book. As I'd read one interview, the subject would make reference to other interviewees and their ideas and if something struck me as being particularly interesting, I'd read the interview with that person next, sort of the way you might surf the net. In some ways it was a very liberating experience and I almost felt like I was creating the book that suited my level of understanding.

Some of the material presented here is undoubtedly very challenging but I didn't feel overwhelmed even if I didn't "get" everything. The only other book I'd read on the subject was V.S. Ramachandran's "A Brief Tour of Human Consciousness," which I found interesting but too brief. I also found that the conversation format in Blackmore's book made the topic more engaging and easier to penetrate. The fact that she is a scientist herself is actually a strength because she uses her intimate knowledge of the field to not only reflect back complex ideas in easy to understand language but also asks the right questions to lead the subjects to deepen their explanations of their work. She clearly has her biases but rather than detracting from the discussions I thought her disagreements with the interviewees brought more life to the material. I had to keep asking myself what I think and had an idea of what I need to learn more about to help make up my mind.

The back of the book has a helpful glossary to assist with learning some of the key terms that are used and also links to a couple of great websites that I'm sure I'll be spending time browsing through.

If you're willing to actively engage with it, this is a great book to start your explorations into a fascinating field.
