Reality Is Not What It Seems: The Journey to Quantum Gravity, by Carlo Rovelli

“The man who makes physics sexy . . . the scientist they’re calling the next Stephen Hawking.” —The Times Magazine

From theNew York Times–bestselling author ofSeven Brief Lessons on Physics, a closer look at the mind-bending nature of the universe.

What are the elementary ingredients of the world? Do time and space exist? And what exactly is reality? Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli has spent his life exploring these questions. He tells us how our understanding of reality has changed over the centuries and how physicists think about the structure of the universe today.

In elegant and accessible prose, Rovelli takes us on a wondrous journey from Democritus to Albert Einstein, from Michael Faraday to gravitational waves, and from classical physics to his own work in quantum gravity. As he shows us how the idea of reality has evolved over time, Rovelli offers deeper explanations of the theories he introduced so concisely inSeven Brief Lessons on Physics.

This book culminates in a lucid overview of quantum gravity, the field of research that explores the quantum nature of space and time, seeking to unify quantum mechanics and general relativity. Rovelli invites us to imagine a marvelous world where space breaks up into tiny grains, time disappears at the smallest scales, and black holes are waiting to explode—a vast universe still largely undiscovered.

Review
“Some physicists, mind you, not many of them, are physicist-poets. They see the world or, more adequately, physical reality, as a lyrical narrative written in some hidden code that the human mind can decipher. Carlo Rovelli, the Italian physicist and author, is one of them…Rovelli's book is a gem. It's a pleasure to read, full of wonderful analogies and imagery and, last but not least, a celebration of the human spirit.”—NPR Cosmos & Culture

“If your desire to be awestruck by the universe we inhabit needs refreshing, theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli…is up to the task.”—Elle

“[Reality Is Not What It Seems] is simultaneously aimed at the curious layperson while also useful to the modern scientist… Rovelli lets us nibble or gorge ourselves, depending on our appetites, on several scrumptious equations. He doesn’t expect everyone to be a master of the equations or even possess much mathematical acumen, but the equations serve as appetizers for those inclined to get their fill, so to speak.”—Raleigh News & Observer

“With its warm, enthusiastic language and tone, [Seven Brief Lessons on Physics] is also deeply humanistic in approach, using words likeelegantandbeautyabout a subject…that can seem impenetrably dense and abstract…Reality Is Not What It Seemstakes much the same approach.”—New York Magazine

“Rovelli writes beautiful prose while walking the reader through the history and concept of 'reality' and what it all means for the yet to be discovered universe and thus our own lives.”—Pasadena Star-News

“Rovelli writes with elegance, clarity and charm. . . . A joy to read, as well as being an intellectual feast.”—New Statesman

“Rovelli’s lyrical language, clarity of thought, and passion for science and its history make the title a pleasure to read (albeit slowly), and his diagrams and footnotes will allow readers to understand the material better and tackle a more expert level of insight.”—Booklist

“Rovelli smoothly conveys the differences between belief and proof. . . his excitement is contagious and he delights in the possibilities of human understanding.”—Publishers Weekly

“Science buffs will admire Rovelli's lucid writing…Cutting-edge theoretical physics for a popular audience that obeys the rules (little math, plenty of drawings), but it's not for the faint of heart.”—Kirkus Reviews

“A fascinating adventure into the outer limits of space and into the smallest atom…Rovelli manages to break down complex, proven ideas into smaller, easily assimilated concepts so those with little to no scientific background can understand the fundamental ideas…Rovelli's infectious enthusiasm and excitement for his subject help carry readers over the more difficult aspects, allowing one to let the imagination soar…An exciting description of the evolution of physics takes readers to the edge of human knowledge of the universe.”—Shelf Awareness

Praise forSeven Brief Lessons on Physics:

“In clear, elegant prose, Rovelli guides the reader through a whirlwind tour of some of the biggest ideas in physics. His passion for his chosen field is evident on every page… One can easily imagine perusing these essays while comfortably ensconced in an overstuffed chair by the fire, a snifter of cognac in hand… The reader will come away…with a deeper understanding of how modern physics has brought us closer to an ultimate understanding of reality.”—The New York Times Book Review

“The essays inSeven Brief Lessons on Physicsarrive like shots of espresso, which you can consume the way the Italians do, quickly and while standing up. As slim as a volume of poetry, Mr. Rovelli’s book also has that tantalizing quality that good books of poems have; it artfully hints at meanings beyond its immediate scope. . . . [H]is book is a roll call of the scientists who have taken us so far, from Einstein and Niels Bohr through Werner Heisenberg and Stephen Hawking. . . . The lessons in Mr. Rovelli’s book, as elegiac as they are incisive, do them justice.” —Dwight Garner, The New York Times

“A startling and illustrative distillation of centuries of science.” —The Economist

“Lean, lucid and enchanting.” —New Scientist

“Delightful . . . The metaphors are vivid, the visions dramatic.” —Nature

A beam of light in dark places
By Alan Goodwin
This book is a book of two halves. The first is a history of physics and in particular the twin pillars of modern physics: The General Theory of Relativity and Quantum Theory. The second is a journey through Quantum Gravity.
Making sense of modern physics can be hard, very hard, for the non scientist. For many years I have read many books grappling with the subject, some good and some not so good. Rovelli's book is a game changer The title of my review refers to the shining of light in dark places because that's how I felt when I read it. Concepts and theories that I'd struggled with through many of those previous books suddenly made sense. The descriptions of Quantum theory and Quantum mechanics were wonderful. I experienced at least three genuine aha moments, moments when you close your eye, lay the book on your lap and breathe slowly with the shear joy of understanding.
As well as the explanations there is also the joy of the writing. Rovelli says on page 88 that "great science and great poetry are both visionary..." There are times when his writing is poetic and it adds to the book's majesty.
This book is a marvel. It is highly recommended.

Elegant writing, uneven physics: 3.5 stars
By Ashutosh S. Jogalekar
Carlo Rovelli continues the tradition from his earlier book, "Seven Brief Lessons on Physics" of combining sparkling descriptions of physical phenomena with a sensitive understanding for the form of physics and the greatness of its practitioners. This book which builds on Rovelli's own work can be divided into two parts.

The first part is a brief history of physics starting with the Greek philosophers Democritus and Anaximander and continuing all the way through Galileo, Newton, Einstein, Feynman, Heisenberg and Dirac. As in his previous book, Rovelli has elegant descriptions of the two great pillars of physics: quantum mechanics and general relativity. He briefly introduces us to the central ideas of both disciplines and emphasizes how fantastic, improbable and yet true they are. Rovelli especially does a good job describing the three main features of the quantum world: granularity, indeterminacy and relationality. He then talks about particle physics and the Standard Model of particle physics and brings us up to speed to the present day.

This sets up the book for the second part, which is a theory of quantum gravity called loop quantum gravity. After explaining how quantum mechanics and general relativity disagree with each other in situations where it matters, Rovelli leads us through the main concepts of loop quantum gravity. Loop quantum gravity imagines spacetime as a set of interlocked loops. This tessellated structure means that spacetime cannot be divided infinitely into smaller and smaller pieces. There is an unimaginably small but still finite dimension called the Planck length beyond which one cannot divide spacetime. According to Rovelli, the finiteness of this division enables the theory of loop quantum gravity to escape some of the ugly infinite solutions that results when one tries to combine the mathematics of standard quantum mechanics with that of general relativity. The chapters at the end introduce thermodynamics and information into gravity. This part is fascinating and Rovelli is definitely pushing the frontiers here, although they are not as clearly written as the earlier ones in my opinion. The book ends with a homage by Rovelli to the constant sense of wonder and uncertainty in science that make it such a powerful intellectual and practical edifice.

The reason why I give the book less than five stars is because it is big on the language but relatively uneven on the physics. Some of the physics is quite good: for instance Rovelli gives a simple explanation based on Heisenberg's uncertainty principle for illustrating why space cannot be infinitely divisible which I found illuminating. But the problem is that he needs to cover a lot of ground before he can prepare the reader for loop quantum gravity. Unfortunately his descriptions of this material are cursory and impressionistic rather than comprehensive and clear. The language is often eloquent and simple and Rovelli clearly appreciates the beauty inherent in physical law. The occasional analogies such as Rovelli's analogy between Dante's circles and Einstein's model of a finite but unbounded universe are revealing and novel, but the explanatory treatment in general is slim. Certain important topics like quarks, inflation and quantum field theory are almost completely left out. Any theory of quantum gravity will need to expound on these concepts before it can clearly reveal itself. I also find it interesting that string theory which is loop quantum gravity's main rival gets little more than a paragraph, so it's still not clear why one would clearly prefer loop quantum gravity over string theory. If one compares this book to volumes by Max Tegmark, Sean Carroll, Brian Greene and John Gribbin, the paucity of explanation should become clear. The treatment in Rovelli's earlier book was also impressionistic, but in that case the nature of the book ("Seven Brief Lessons") lent itself well to that format.

I would thus recommend the book if you want further examples of Rovelli's impressionistic style. As a leisurely walk through certain old and new concepts of physics it offers an elegantly worded guide. But if you want to understand modern physics in general and quantum gravity in particular, you will probably have to look elsewhere.

Brings clarity to the incomprehensible.
By NeilB
Review of: “REALITY IS NOT WHAT IT SEEMS” by Carlo Rovelli
For those who have an even casual interest in modern physics or “science” this is a truly remarkable book. Rovelli is able to take highly complex problems and express them in a way which can make them accessible to even those who think that mathematics is simply something you use to figure out how much change you should get at the supermarket or doing the highly difficult calculation of how much to tip on a restaurant bill.
Over the years I have read literally dozens of books written for the nonscientist about special and general relativity, quantum mechanics, Brane theory, String Theory, Information Theory and quantum loop gravity. This is the first time I have encountered one which makes some real sense about these abstract concepts and clearly answers a question which has bothered me throughout this quest for knowledge: Is there such a thing as quantum time or is time simply a construct, an invention we use to measure the concurrence between different events.
Spoiler Alert. Not only does quantum time exist it appears to be a requirement for healing the conflict between relativity and quantum mechanics. As most readers are aware Einstein’s theories of both general and special relativity are remarkably accurate and have passed every test to which they have been subjected as long as they apply to very large things. Quantum mechanics, the strange physics of the very small, is also exceedingly accurate in its predictions as long as it stays within its “range.” However these two great theories fail miserably when combined. This failure results from the combined mathematics giving results that result in answers that are infinite. A big no no in both mathematics and reality.
According to Rovelli this can be overcome by the basic understanding that all “things” are quantized. That is there is a smallest possible size for the most basic of concepts including space and time. You may of heard about something called Zeno’s paradox. This can be stated in many ways but let’s take something that we do every day. Most of us when we get out of bed go to the bathroom. A rather basic task, which some may find harder than others to achieve and yet we are almost always able to achieve that goal. So what is paradoxical about that?
Well when I get up in order to get to the bathroom I have to go half way say to my chair. That seems easy enough. But then from my chair I once more have to go half way to my final goal, the bathroom. So far I am seem to be doing okay, but am I? Now, unfortunately, I start thinking; how many half ways are there from the point I have reached to that elusive bathroom? Oh oh I exclaim I can keep on cutting this distance in half an infinite number or times. If so not only can I not reach the bathroom I could not have even begun to get out of bed, the initial place I began.
What’s the solution? Am I forever stuck at one place and if not why not. The solution is the quantum of space. Space itself cannot be infinitely divided in half because there is indeed a smallest piece of space which is called the Plank length or unit. The Plank unit is very, very small but is greater than zero or in other words finite. No matter how hard I try to divide this unit it stays the same length and the concept of half of it is impossible and I am therefore not bound by infinity of lengths. I am free to do one of my most basic obligations of the day.
Well if there is indeed a smallest possible piece of space how about time. Most of us have heard about the concept of space time. I had until recently mistakenly believed that the concept of space time was an invention of Einstein. It was actually proposed by another mathematician, Minkowski and is therefore referred to as Minkowski’s space time. The rational for this is highly complex but if this postulate had a bearing on reality could time itself actually be quantized. That would mean that time is not simply a way of measuring things but has a physical reality as well. I assume by now you have guessed that indeed there in a quantum of time beyond which there is no way to divide time. That length of time is the time it takes for a photon traveling at the speed of light (c) to travel on plank unit. A very, very, very small bit of time but a bit that is indeed finite.
Thus we have removed from the equations of physics the two things that have always been considered infinite and make them finite. The result is that there are no infinities no matter what the conditions are in the universe, everything is finite. Whether at the Big Bank itself or at any place in the universe there are no infinities only finites are allowed.
If you are interested in an accessible (understandable) description of how this comes about read Reality Is Not What It Seems. I doubt this will change anything in my life or yours except that I sleep better since I no longer have to worry about not being able to get to the bathroom the next morning.

The Martial Ethic in Early Modern Germany: Civic Duty and the Right of Arms (Early Modern History Society and Culture), by B. Tlusty

For German townsmen, life during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was characterized by a culture of arms, with urban citizenry representing the armed power of the state. This book investigates how men were socialized to the martial ethic from all sides, and how masculine identity was confirmed with blades and guns.

Review

'A well-written treatment of an important topic, which offers an ambitious analysis of the relationship between the right of German townsmen to bear arms and early modern understandings of citizenship, honour and gender.' - Christopher R. Friedrichs, University of British Columbia, Canada

'...admirably-organized and lucidly argued study.' -Peter H. Wilson, University of Hull, German History

'This is a highly original and ground-breaking study that brings to life a key aspect of early modern society...Tlusty is the first to fully investigate this martial ethic as part of German politics -a politics, as she keeps emphasizing, best seen as a practice rather than a set of abstract ideas. The unintended effects of this phenomenon are skilfully brought into view as is its longevity.' - Ulinka Rublack, The Journal of Modern History

Phenomenal resource
By Juerg Gassmann
Ann Tlusty's book is a phenomenal resource for the researcher interested in the non-aristocratic, city-based culture of the German lands in the late middle ages and early renaissance. Her research is extensive, the literature comprehensive and a treasure trove.

Her book shines a light on the colourful world of how the cities’ burghers managed their own affairs, their overall success in maintaining their self-governing status and the justifiable pride they took in the fact. Older history tended to contrast the “patriotic” and “democratic” (or at least “republican”) martial Swiss cantons with a Germany where the burghers were eclipsed by the princes. Ann Tlusty’s well-documented narrative is a lively-argued contribution to the on-going, healthy correction of that image; all of Germany, including Switzerland, was one legal and cultural space, and regional diversity was matter of degree.

For me as a practitioner of historical European martial arts, it is also satisfying to see Ann Tlusty give the training and culture of combat with the various bladed weapons their proper due. It is furthermore a challenge to the numerous HEMA researchers and experts to bring their findings into the academic world.

Still, I have three comments, quibbles or observations:

- Ann Tlusty discounts the military merits of city militias, basing her judgement on the fact that cities abandoned training with the long pike in the late 16th C; the long pike was integral to the fearsome "tercio" formation, the key to Spanish-Habsburg battlefield dominance. But the abandonment of the pike probably has more to do with the changes in fortifications, which put a premium on musketry and gunnery from cover, and skill with blade weapons for hand-to-hand combat. There was no room for pikes. The cities' fascination for long guns and artillery, well documented by Tlusty, is perfectly rational in that context. That city militias behind prepared fortifications were a potent force is demonstrated by the numerous futile sieges during the 30 Years’ War, and highlighted by the 1,500 mostly militia defenders of Brnn/Brno holding off a 28,000 strong Swedish army in the war’s closing phases.
- In Chapter 8 Case Study I, Ann Tlusty illustrates a conflict between “law” and “custom”; in reality, it is a conflict between “law” and “law” inherent in the mind-bogglingly complicated legal machinery of the feudal order. The stresses of the feudal order were exacerbated by the Reformation and, in Germany, found their violent resolution in the 30 Years’ War; commonwealths that had achieved a measure of constitutional consolidation before the Reformation – like Switzerland – escaped the war (Case Study II of the same chapter, in my view, is not typical of any age, but the situation; one can imagine a similar conflict arising with the US or English commandant in a newly liberated WW II French or Italian town).
- Ann Tlusty draws a straight line from the 17th C shooting societies to the patriotically-motivated citizen armies of the 19th C, seeing the intervening period as a time where the historical martial spirit was attenuated and then subverted. She misses a trick here; the actual development is more complicated, and much more supportive of her thesis. After the 30 Years' War, princely rulers, seeking to perfect absolutism, relied on small, highly-trained professional armies made up of pressed or mercenary ranks and officered by the nobility (as a further quibble, I disagree with Tlusty's assessment that the 17th C saw the opening of military advancement to the bourgeoisie and the marginalisation of the nobility – the opposite is the case). But these professional forces had nothing to do with patriotism, only with princely claims of "l'tat c'est moi". The consequence was the collapse of the "anciens rgimes" – including the vaunted Swiss estates – under the onslaught of Napoleon's troops; absolutism's "subjects" were not "citizens", they had no "fatherland" to feel patriotic about. But patriotism survived in the shooting societies, the gymnastic societies (Turnvereine) and the students' societies (Verbindungen); it was these that demonstrated, protested – and fought – first against Napoleon, and then against the restoration efforts of Metternich and his acolytes in the time between Napoleon's defeats and the revolutions of 1848. True, the Second "Reich" is nobody's image of the heady liberalism of the "Vormrz". But, for better or worse, it is the embodiment of the patriotic citizen-militia nation-state.

Forming connections between human performance and design

Engineering Psychology and Human Performance, 4e examines human-machine interaction. The book is organized directly from the psychological perspective of human information processing. The chapters generally correspond to the flow of information as it is processed by a human being--from the senses, through the brain, to action--rather than from the perspective of system components or engineering design concepts.

This book is ideal for a psychology student, engineering student, or actual practitioner in engineering psychology, human performance, and human factors

Learning Goals

Upon completing this book, readers should be able to:

  • Identify how human ability contributes to the design of technology.
  • Understand the connections within human information processing and human performance.
  • Challenge the way they think about technology’s influence on human performance.
  • show how theoretical advances have been, or might be, applied to improving human-machine interaction

The Ice Princess (Patrik Hedstrom, Book 1), by Camilla Lackberg

The American debut of internationally bestselling Swedish writer Camilla Lackberg’s haunting first novel.

Returning to her hometown of Fjallbacka after the funeral of her parents, writer Erica Falck finds a community on the brink of tragedy. The death of her childhood friend, Alex, is just the beginning. Her wrists slashed, her body frozen in an ice-cold bath, it seems that she has taken her own life.

Erica conceives a book about the beautiful but remote Alex, one that will answer questions about their own shared past. While her interest grows into an obsession, local detective Patrik Hedstrom is following his own suspicions about the case. But it is only when they start working together that the truth begins to emerge about a small town with a deeply disturbing past.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. At the start of Lckberg's haunting U.S. debut, the first of her seven novels set in the Swedish coastal town of Fjllbacka, biographer Erica Falck returns home to sort through her deceased parents' belongings and work on her next book. But this is not the same hometown she grew up in. Summer tourists are turning the former fishing village into a thriving resort, and Erica's controlling brother-in-law is pressuring her to cash in by selling the family home. The apparent suicide of childhood friend Alexandra Wijkner contributes to Erica's grief. Once inseparable, they drifted apart before Alex's family abruptly moved away, and Erica feels compelled to write a novel about why the beautiful Alex would kill herself. Lckberg skillfully details how horrific secrets are never completely buried and how silence can kill the soul. A parallel between the town's downward spiral and the fate of one of Fjllbacka's wealthiest families adds texture. (June)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Murray, who has translated the works of both Henning Mankell and Stieg Larsson, adds another Scandinavian crime star to his rsum with this subtle rendering of Lackberg’s debut, a number-one best-seller in Sweden and the winner of France’s 2008 Grand Prix de Littrature Policire for Best International Crime Novel. Erica, a thirtysomething biographer struggling with her latest book, deals with her grief over her parents’ untimely death and her mixed feelings about returning to her hometown after years in Stockholm. On a whim, she visits her childhood friend Alex only to find her dead in the bathtub. The grieving parents ask Erica to write an article about Alex for a local newsletter, which forces her to try to make sense of her friend’s life and death. As Erica delves deeper into Alex’s past, she begins to work with a local police officer, Patrik, another childhood friend, and together they uncover secrets that some people would greatly prefer were left secret. Set in winter in the coastal town of Fjallbacka, the novel uses the off-season quiet in the small village—many of the houses are empty—to create a chilling atmosphere in which silence drives suspense. This excellent thriller is a must-read for fans of Scandinavian crime literature and will especially appeal to those who enjoy Asa Larsson’s Rebecka Martinsson novels, as Rebecka and Erica are of a similar age and both return to the remote villages of their childhoods. --Jessica Moyer

Review
“The hottest crime genre of the moment is Nordic noir and Swedish writer Camilla Lckberg (who shares Stieg Larsson’s translator) is one of the reasons. As with all Scandinavian murder mysteries, it’s darker, bleaker, and the plot far more sinister than similar American fare. Larsson fans who give Lckberg’s novel a chance to seduce them will be rewarded.” (USA Today )

“[T]he writing is highly atmospheric and the pacing keeps the pages turning. Fjllbacka itself is a compelling presence in the narrative, an ideal setting for this small-town murder mystery.” (Debra Ginsberg - Shelf Awareness )

“Ingenious. Strong portrayals and ice-cold suspense.” (Metropol [France] )

“Starred Review. Haunting...Lckberg skillfully details how horrific secrets are never completely buried and how silence can kill the soul.” (Publishers Weekly )

“Camilla Lckberg has written seven blockbuster novels in her native Swedish but, until now, no one has published any of them in the United States. Now Pegasus Books has stepped forward.” (The New York Times )

“A top-class Scandinavian writer.” (The Times [London] )

“Chilly, deceptive and lucid, just like the icy environment it describes.” (The Literary Review )

“The plot is simply superb. A book that you can’t put down.” (Sala Allehanda (Sweden) )

“A more than welcome addition to the growing ranks of Scandinavian fiction. With her sharp eye for emotional nuances and psychological insight, Fjallbacka and its crimes and people will soon be as popular here as they are in her native Sweden.” (Peter Robinson, author of All the Colors of Darkness )

“Heart-stopping—a masterclass in Scandinavian crime writing.” (Val McDermid, author of the Dr. Tony Hill and Carol Jordan mysteries )

Love mysteries?
By AZN8TV
I bought this book on the strength of a review published in a magazine.

I had not heard of Camilla Lackberg, but am a great fan of well written mysteries.

WOW! I was sutured into the characters and the stories from the first page.

It was the equivalent of being on a literary roller-coaster. The characters develop slowly, yet tantalizingly. It reminded me of that first bite of an exquisite chocolate, the last bar of it ever produced. You want to keep eating it, but you know it's going to end and will be no more. With each tiny bite, you know it's something special. So, you savor each and every bite.

Quite honestly, I was kept in suspense until the last pages. This is rare for me. Usually I can figure out where the book is headed by mid-way. I was humbled by this book.

If you love a good mystery novel, this will delight you in ways previously unknown.

The great news...this is her first book in this series. I can't wait to read the rest.

Good story, interesting places, good read
By Marcos K X Bastos
This first book on the Patrick Hedstrom / Erica Falck series was my first Camilla Lckberg book and I liked it. Good read, not so heavy. It is interesting to read a story set in such a different place, and I like to find places in a map as I read, not only regions and cities, but the actual roads and streets. This is possible because they are the real ones in the book. Of course we know Gothenburg, but how else would anyone hear of Fjllbacka, Tanumshede and Uddevalla? Great for armchair travellers.

I've read a lot of reviews with complaints about the story and its supposed flaws, such as not giving all the clues at once, etc. However, none of them seem to impair the story for me. There may be authors who go by theses rules, that's OK too. Reading would then become a clue game. But literature has other ways to involve the reader and create suspense. Not giving every information, by the way, is also a common resource in TV and movies. The book kept me interested and I never wanted to put it down.I'll be reading other books from this author.

Okay story, very rough writing
By Kathryn Chappell
If you are looking for a mindless read and don't put too much stock in quality of writing, this book might be for you. Unfortunately, I had just finished reading Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series, which are impeccably written, and the contrast to this book's extremely inauthentic dialogue made it difficult for me to finish.

The author struggles to navigate the slow unveil of clues within the mystery, instead having one of the characters find a clue then wait for as many as 100 pages to reveal it to the reader. It felt like an amateur attempt.

Also, I felt zero investment in the love story within the book. It was telegraphed from the moment the character was introduced, and the attempt at creating tension as it developed made me cringe over and over again.

There were a few surprises I didn't see coming in the book, but mostly I feel that was because the writing kept me from truly being interested in the story as it unfolded.

I would recommend skipping this unless you are looking for a completely mindless read.

Simple, seductive, sexy
By Allen Smalling
Simple, seductive, sexy: Here are 80 pages of wordless cartoon porn by Mioki, author of SIDE BY SIDE and STILL SIDE BY SIDE. Stylistically, the young gay men here are little more than line drawings filled in with hair and (pink) skin tones and the simplest backgrounds; clothes may exist but are usually shed quickly. Since there are orgasm shots, some of the drawings have to be considered "hardcore" but these liaisons maintain an innocent quality, even when the pair's friends and a "daddy" or two join the proceedings and three- or foursomes result. Unlike Dale Lazarov's books like STICKY or MANLY, POPCORN does not contain any plot, but in its simplicity may appeal to the same audience, especially those looking for younger guys. Why the title? We're not sure, but like the snack once you're put in front of it you're bound to finish it all.

SWEET AND SEXY
By Anthony McGill
Characters from Mioki's previous Side by Side series reappear in this new book. Mioki's drawings are plain and simple and display a lot of fun. They aren't as stylish or as graphic as maybe those from other artists such as Zack or Patrick Fillion or Joseph Hawk, but there is an innocent sweetness to them that make them very appealing. One negative with Popcorn is that there is no real story line or any of the rich background settings which made the earlier books so outstanding. But on the positive side, Mioki's boys are engaged in some fun and exciting sexual activities including bondage and dildo action. Don't expect anything too graphic but Popcorn is still a nice little addition to your gay art library.

Sexy young gay guys getting it on!
By William Lance Lenon
This is a massively sexy Gay book of drawings! I love Mioki's work and own his other books. There was much bondage shown here, and it was wonderful! Mioki's work proves that drawings can be as sexy as photographs!

remote from the interests of the present day
By Lynn Hoffman, author:Radiation Days: A Comedy
The author cautions us in the introduction:

"...it would be difficult to find anything as remote from the interests of the present day as the contents of this book"

and indeed he is right. the pursuit of wisdom seems so remote from our world as to be beyond quaint. Conze, whose other writings are Buddhism are exemplary, is in good humor about the exoticism of his concerns. He proceeds anyway with translations of the Diamond and Heart Sutras, two short discourses on meditative wisdom that are roughly contemporary with the last of the Christian Gospels.
The beauty of these translations must lie, for most of us , in the translator's comments. They are subtle, sharp and wry and turn us back at every instance to the radical difference of Buddhism from other world religions and from other philosophical systems.
These sutras are especially good companion reading to the contemporary Christian texts as they highlight the differences in concerns between tradtions and suggest the possible width of spiritual discourse.

This edition, from Allen and Unwin, is the one to get, the paperback is flimsy and hard to hold.
