This review is based on the kindle version of this book.....
This book had ten 5-star reviews before I bought it. What I just noticed was that none of those 10 reviews were labeled as "verified purchased". This book doesn't seem to have been proof read, or had any sort of editing before being publish. There are grammar errors, bad coding practices, and by chapter 5 the whole project you build up to that point completely falls apart.

The screenshots in the book for the game at the end of chapter 5 looked nothing like what I had so I downloaded the source code from the publishers website and guess what! The screenshots in the book don't match the code by the author either!

This book was clearly rushed and I feel as if I wasted my money on it.

Clear Step-by-Step introduction to 2D sprite programming on iOS

First off, I received an early review copy of the book from Packt. I typically use Packt 'by example' titles to get some practice with new technology. The main quality of this book is that it includes a clear progression of knowledge and skills from introductory Sprite Kit basics to the more advanced example apps. The book can easily serve as a general introduction to 2D sprite programming as well as a practical guide to making your own games on iOS. The code examples are easy enough to follow but as with all developer books, the code might need some tweaking based on your version of Xcode and your machine. I attached a picture of the final app working on my computer as proof that the code works

Although the book provides a chapter on iOS 9 compatibility, I could knock off 1/2 a star because I felt it could do more throughout the book on Swift 2 compatibility and the new features coming in Swift 2. However, it does a great job on introducing basic 2D Sprite programming concepts and combining said topics into a working app.

Few days before the release I was provided with reviewer copy by Packt Publishing. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, because of its concise manner of guiding through SpriteKit’s components, and diligently revealing their dependencies and interactions with structured approach. The book’s clear and uncluttered presentation helped me to develop strong mental map of Sprite Kit’s internal hierarchy.
Coming from OpenGL background, book helped me understand the peculiarities of Sprite-based rendering. The book is invaluable tool for quick familiarization with SpriteKit, Swift and Xcode’s GUI. The book uncovers the framework by creating the example game, but instead of simple “repeat this” instructions, every major concept gets succinct introduction and frequent infographics.
If you need a guide to break into SpriteKit, and develop a solid understanding of SpriteKit framework and Swift, this book fulfills these tasks gracefully.

This book is an excellent summation of the progress made in discovering sub-atomic particles, It may not now be up to date (it was printed in 1991), but I would not forgo the learning within, or the Asimov method of presenting it. Isaac Asimov specialty was explaining difficult subjects to his readers. He did an admiral job keeping the subject matter interesting. Each short chapter is dedicated to a particle, ex. mesons, quarks, bosons. Each chapter also gives a little historical background of the search and discovery behind each particle and how it fits within the sub-atomic world. Nuclear physicists may have progressed far beyond this by now, but this is still a good book for piecing together the subatomic puzzle of particles.

i'm 15 this year and i am studying physics in school. after reading this book, i have understood more concepts much more easily. the diagrams included are great. Asimov is really a great writer ad i strongly recommend it to anyonee interested in physics.

Great resource

If you are wanting a book to tell you WHERE things are, then buy an atlas or just use Google Earth. If you are wanting a text to explain WHY things are, then this may be your book.

I teach a Geography course at a Christian private school, and last year, selected this as our textbook. Unlike "normal" texts employed at most schools (both Christian and secular), which tend to be loaded with some sort of agenda - this one simply brings the facts forward in plain, understandable language. I have not regretted my choice. Not only does it cut through the useless crud, it also addresses almost every topic required for the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) requirements. (I did a line-by-line comparison to justify my choice of text)

It is well organized into 4 main sections and a 5th which is filled with helpful lists. It clearly explains the six essential elements of Geography: 1) The world in spatial terms, 2) Places and regions, 3) Physical systems, 4) Human systems, 5) Environment and society, and 6) Uses of geography.

I have been very pleased with this book... it is even reasonably entertaining to read. I highly recommend it IF you want to learn about the science of Geography. If you just want to know where things are located... you should choose a more appropriate tool.

I'm impressed!

I bought this book because I wanted to know where things are in the world. Everytime I read a book that talks about countries or places, I know "in general" where those are but not really, and some not at all. This book taught me that and so much more. It's well written, easy to understand and very entertaining. What once was a boring topic to me is now a fascination. It's money well spent........buy it!

This book has a clear tone and Bias in many of the subjects covered. Plus it was not very in-depth. Unfortunately I have to say I wouldn't recommend it, period. It will give you a general idea of some basic geographical concepts, and nothing more. The rest of the info covered is common knowledge.

About the Author
Annemarie Selinko was born in Vienna in 1914. She was a successful journalist and novelist. In 1938 she moved to Copenhagen, and subsequently lived in Stockholm, Paris and London, before returning to Copenhagen. Annemarie Selinko died in Copenhagen in 1986.

An interesting fictional accounting of Napoleon's empire

I read this book for the first time in one of my mother's Reader's Digest Condensed Version and really enjoyed it. In fact, it was the beginning of my interest in Napoleon and his Empire. I have since found some historical inaccuracies, for example, Desiree Clary was emphatic that it was NOT Napoleon who named her son Oscar, but her brother-in-law Joseph Bonaparte. Napoleon took the credit in one of his public relations propaganda pieces. Also, Desiree was her name as used by her family. Napoleon called her Eugenie (as was his usual habit of renaming his inamorata) because he hated the physical connotations of her other name. He even wrote a short play, in his youth, entitled Clisson (read Napoleon) and Eugenie. However, beyond these fictional licenses by the author, it is a fun, readable book that manages to show the main characters as people instead of just merely historical figures. This book is for anyone who has an interest in the period or wants a good clean historical romance romp.

A great romp through the Napoleonic Court

I first read this book as a teenager in one of my mother's Reader's Digest Condensed Books. It was the catalyst for my interest in Napoleon and the French Empire. I now have a library full of titles regarding those two topics. The book is very well written, Ms. Selinko is able to have Desiree grow from adolescence to middle age without losing the intrinsic parts of her character. There is a lot of fictional license here, but it is still an entertaining, well written, well researched account of life at the French court. It makes historical figures come alive and you can sympathize with their personal struggles. All in all, a old fashioned good time.
